Removing trans and transfer case 89 K1500

I'm finally ready to pull the running gear out of my donor truck (89 K1500, 5.7, 700R4 and NP 241C). Plan A was to pull it all out in one unit, but the weight and length looks like it will be too much of a problem. Plan B is to split it at the flex plate and pull the transmission and t-case first then pull the engine.

The tail shaft of the t-case sticks back past the torsion bar crossmember, so dropping it straight down is not looking possible. I don't want to mess with the torsion bars, so am looking for any ideas how to get this out.

I thought that I might be able to rotate the trans/t-case enough to get it out, but am not sure. The exhaust and drivelines are already out, so I have as much room as I ever will. The trans crossmember is already out.

Does anyone have any suggestions or a better plan?

Thanks
Steve

Re: Removing trans and transfer case 89 K1500

I overhauled the driveline in my '89 back in '13 so it's been awhile. A box end ratcheting 15M wrench came in handy from what I remember. My newly rebuilt 700R4 failed along with a leaking freeze plug at the back of the block failed requiring this job 2X. Separate the trans and the TC to make that job easier. The TC weighs 80 lbs. so be prepared. I used short lengths of 4x4 boards stacked as supports underneath the trans and TC while I was working and the truck was on Rhino ramps and jackstands. I posted some of my work here during that time.

I agree, I would take off the transfer case first. You can rotate it to drop it down. Then remove the rest.
