Post #19... 10-24?, 10-32?, 1/4-20 etc. What is written in #19 can you please explain it to us? I'm curious as to what it means.

Re: inside door handles falling off

OK I guess 12-20 is not a common size. From what I have just looked up #12 thread pitch would normally be 24 or 28 threads per inch. I think I would try running a 12-24 tap through before going to 1/4"

So that tells me that if I measured the screw correctly at 12 -20 it must have been a special screw made by GM.

Does nobody supply these original type door handle screws? It seems wasteful to drill and tap good original handles for lack of the correct screw.

Their 1/4"-20 threads. Slotted Dog Point Set Screw. I think we'd be looking a long time to find exact new ones though. You can find allen head dog points though.

Re: inside door handles falling off

My mistake then if they really are 1/4 - 20. I should have thought to put a caliper on the threads. Then it would be easy to modify something 1/4 - 20 to work. Not a total waste of time, we have pictures.

Re: inside door handles falling off

More surface area, the better for clamping (threads and set screw end).

My original screws were #12 or possibly a metric thread with a slotted head and they kept coming loose from the shank. I drilled and tapped them for 1/4-20 set screws with an allen head.

Re: inside door handles falling off

1/4 - 20 they are. I measured the major thread diameter at .243" so close enough. The head diameter was .252" and the the little nub at the end was .150" diameter. Time to eat crow. I must have been having a seniors moment.

Re: inside door handles falling off

Wow. I pulled the set screws for the window cranks (counter part) and door handles in hopes to place in there dog point allen set screws instead. With a thread gauge I went through everything I had and couldn't find a match, some kind of strange made up BS.
The originals I have are 1/4-20 but very old and worn. Maybe I can tap them, what do you think?

Re: inside door handles falling off

My originals were rough so I went with the aftermarket after picking them up off the floor several times I used a little Loctite

Yes, I just installed them with blue loctite, so we shall see.

I did the same

Re: inside door handles falling off

If anyone has any lead shot (smaller), I put some in the handles and put the set screw in and tighten. I use it on my reloading dies and pretty much anything with a set screw.....

I haven't had them fall off yet! The lead squishes pretty good unless you use too much. I have really tiny re-used lead shot from indoor ranges that I'm using.
