SPI Shoutout

Big shout out to SPI. I got on their web site yesterday and made a shopping list. Called them today and they gave me the number of the local rep. Turns out he lives about four miles from me. Just got my epoxy primer, reducer, and wax/grease remover delivered to my door.

Fantastic and now I am ready to go to work!

Re: SPI Shoutout

I called SPI last Friday and ordered some epoxy primer. Guy happily answered all my questions and told me the order would ship out same day.Very cool customer service. It was delivered the following Tuesday. Now time to man up and attempt my first paint job.

Which products are you using? Have you sprayed before?

Re: SPI Shoutout

I am using their black epoxy along with their reducer and W&G remover. I've painted many things from motorcycles to trailers but have never attempted something this big.

My short term goal is to get me new bed box in epoxy and then start working on my original fenders. They are in good shape but they need stripping and sealing.

Re: SPI Shoutout

For those spraying this epoxy, it has a bit more build than most epoxies, so your normal 1.3 or 1.4 tip is not ideal. I find my 1.7 polyester gun lays it flatter, less orange peel, than my 1.4 gun. FYI.....

Thank you for this information as I was going to use my typical 1.4 on this. I'm still getting everything lined up right now. Been busy with other stuff but planned one final square/fitment check so I can mark the outside two boards in the floor before pulling everything apart. Trying to give myself a decent chance of it all fitting without too much trouble later.

Re: SPI Shoutout

Another great thing about their epoxy is that the pot life is very long, like a few days if kept at 70ish. It already builds more than other epoxies, but if you mix it and let it sit til the next day it thickens and will build even more. I've done a few smaller projects with nothing but epoxy to seal bare metal, then bodywork with filler, then 3-4 coats of epoxy for high build/sealer in one step. Block with 180, wetsand with 4-500, and its ready for paint.

Their Universal Clear is really good, I've sprayed it on a few projects and prefer it to PPG or Spies. Buffs easily too. I'm about to try their white basecoat and Euro clear.

Their 2k urethane primer is an excellent product as well- plenty of build in three coats to block out 90% of the quick/rough bodywork I did on a personal quickie paint job, I was very impressed with it. Their 2k high build would've probably built enough more to fill everything in one go.

Re: SPI Shoutout

A bit of a hijack - but not really ..

Question - SPI Epoxy and/or 2k primer. How long could it potentially stay in a sealed / un-used can and still be ok to use? I bought some for a project and didnt end up using it. It has been in my shop for about 1.5yr. Would you use it, just maybe shake it good .. or is it garbage? Kinda risky .. just wanted to get some opinions. Thanks.

Re: SPI Shoutout

If it's been sitting that long the solids have likely settled some. Stir it with a stir stick to get solids mixed back together and then mix up a small batch with the hardener to test. (The hardener is what will likely go bad if anything) Let it set a few days in 65+ degree heat to see if it starts to harden. If it hardens, great. If it doesn't, replace the hardener.

I've had some sit that long without issue.

Re: SPI Shoutout

Just ordered epoxy primer, reducer and cleaner directly from them....they're about 2 hrs from me across the mountain in GA.
Brian was very helpful and willing to answer all my questions and share information about the products.

Re: SPI Shoutout

I only got a quart of the black epoxy primer to see how I would like it and have already got my local guy to bring me a gallon of epoxy primer and gallon of activator. If the weekend will go my way I'll get the bed sides in primer this weekend. Got the front panel, rear sill, and tailgate done.

Re: SPI Shoutout

Here are a few pics of my project. I’m currently working on the bed and hope to have it all together in the next couple of weeks. I prefer Universal Clear, but had a gallon and a half of Euro clear to use, so that is what I used. I still have some panel alignment to do, but it is oncoming along

Re: SPI Shoutout

Indy,
Want to come down and rush through mine for me? If I get as good a look as that I'll be tickled pink. Looks better than good to me.

Thanks! 5 weeks ago this baby blue C10 was in parts that had been fitted, but not ready for paint. It has a few flaws that I’ve had to get ok living with. For me, it will be a daily on all but rainy days. I named the project “hurry up” because we are selling our property and I won’t have a shop for a while.
