i've been working the truck already for about 6 months but haven't had the time to start a thread so i figured i needed to get caught up


i bought the truck for $630 with a bad rear end smoking motor and both sides of the truck were a different color didn't have any powerbrakes or powersteering but i drove it for a couple months before the rearend blew up which is when i picked up a dana 61 with 3.31's instead of the 4.11 the truck had anyways i threw that in and did a axle flip then parked it and went out of state :blah blah blah:

so when i got back i knew the truck would need a new motor which is when my brother in law gave me a 406 he had sitting (all the work is also being done in his garage ) turned out there was a bit of rust in the cylinders so i pretty much did a "fresh'n up" on it ended up being more of a full rebuild

heres the tear down of the 406







everything was in pretty good shape due to there only being about 700 miles on the motor when it got parked but a few cylinders did get rust




i soaked the cylinder in diesel and sanded down the rust so i could get the piston out without damage



then i had 3 cylinders sleeved (2 due to rust 1 due to a pit) and honing new cam bearings all that good stuff



then i was waiting on parts and money so i got the truck and starting tearing down the frontend













it was pretty dirty everything was SOAKED in oil








got the parts in and the short block together



got some rebuilt heads from the shop




some paint helped it look good

so here the motor is in the first time...then it back out again because the pilot bushing wasn't in all the way





here i have the sheet metal back on most the engine hooked up power steering box on new power brake booster and master (sorry the pictures are fuzzy my camera broke half way through the build)



and here the motor is ready to fire....till we put water in and the water pump started leaking

new water pump 7:00 the next morning




but by the next day we were ready to go everything went pretty smooth so i was happy there wasn't any problems

thanks but yeah and a whole one before that just to get the front clip off by myself i've got a bit more done including paint but i haven't had time to get all the pictures together maybe tomorrow night

alright i finally got some time to update this but im a little low on pictures for alot of this and most of the things were simple so pictures aren't so needed anyways i've

*finished putting power brakes in

*replaced all 4 wheel cylinders and brakes (i was surprised to find out the dana 61 has one time use axle nuts and there $20 each thats $40 extra every brake job!)

*cleaned the diff and replaced the leaking pinion seal diff gasket axle seals and replaced the u-joint

*took apart the steering column and fixed most of the slop still real bad so i'll need a new one but at least the steering wheel doesn't fall out anymore

*put my radio speakers different steering wheel and power seats in

and lots of other little things but the big thing is i painted the truck im pretty happy with it for my first paint job i learned a lot and think i'll do a bit better next time













the last couple are after i spent a day cleaning it out but thats about it right now i did get the bumper on and it street legal today was the first drive off my street and it drove great only went about 10 miles but tomorrow i plan on taking it for a real drive

Thanks the engine bay looks a bit better now with wheel wells on but i still have a bit of little detail work to do in there should have more pictures soon

you know i cant say for sure but was about till about 3:30 in the morning masking so i know it was quite a bit mixed with a few sparks

Thanks im pretty happy with it for now i got a lot of body work to do still later but this was more of just to get it back on the road but its driving great and it does get lots of looks

got a little update haven't been doing to much just driving it and its been driving pretty damn good i had a problem with the charging system but it turned out just to be a rusty inline fuse and i had a pretty bad stumble here and there so i switched the vacuum adv from ported to manifold(wasn't sure witch port was witch before) and put a mr gasket fuel regulator on


of course the mr gasket was junk after a few days of using it (but it running much better) it leaked gas all over filled the intake with gas frame rails dripping on the exhaust all that good stuff so i replaced it with a holley regulator witch was a pretty straight forward install once i found a place with NPT to flare adapter fittings and made up a bracket


some alum sheeting i had....who knows what this came from




little work in the vise




and bam



it looks alright for now(better then the cell phone pictures make it look ) the bracket could use a bit more polishing and soon as i find the right fittings i'll get rid of that cluster of brass under the gauge but its working good for now

tomorrow im going to pick up new brake hoses for the front since one blew out and i still am having trouble getting the collector gaskets to seal but they are getting close i also think i have a valve cover gasket leak so i gotta track that down but for right now im pretty happy with how its running

i don't think i have anymore pictures now but i'll get some tomorrow with a real camera it was pretty easy to make the bracket once i had the regulator in place but i had to egg shape the lower holes on the holley bracket and counter sink the side holes so that bolts would fit other then that and finding the NPT to flared fittings it was pretty simple

but i also plan on remaking mine once i switch over to steel braided hose and AN fittings just because the mounting ended up a little low due to having to reflare the steel line

i finally got some pictures there not that great because i spent last night and this morning resealing my intake valve covers pressure gauge all that crap but i think i got it all sealed up now it wouldn't have been such a pain but i didn't think about the fact that the drive way is on a hill and and with the rear lowered water stayed in the back of the heads and ended up in the lifter valley but i got it all flushed out with oil (ended up spending about $60 on oil alone) so it all should be good now just gotta recheck the timing and take it for a drive




the bracket looks better with the air cleaner on it kind of stands out in the pictures thats also why i wanna lower the gauge and get the steel feed line from the carb

so unfortunately i haven't got much done on the truck lately due to being hit by a car on september 1st (i was on a bicycle so the trucks fine) but im starting to be able to put weight on my leg so i got some little stuff taken care of

mainly i put my tech in my dash and put in a autometer oil pressure gauge i got a while back


i was thinking about pulling them out of the case and mounting them behind the original plastic lens but i couldn't see them as well and its not like the rest of the interior looks great so they'll be good for now (in fact i might get another cab before i start working on the interior since theres so much rust)

and i only payed $14 bucks for the oil pressure gauge on sale at kragen

i should of garbed some OE from the gas station on my way back but i didn't i had rode the bike over to autozone to get a base gasket for the carb because a heli coil someone had put in the intake had stripped and i had to take the spacer off im hoping to get some little things done on the truck today but we'll see how that goes

so i've been working on lots of little stuff but no pictures of the boring stuff i did however make a footprint gas pedal the other day and im pretty happy with how it turned out i've always wanted one and i think it matchs the 8 ball shifter pretty good

first i tryed just painting it but i didn't spend to much time masking it because i planed on stripping the paint off later and polishing the outer edge and bowtie but the paint looked pretty bad so i cut out some grip tape for it which it needed for traction anyway i got some progress pictures just for you gcburdic

its by far not perfect but i figure i put my foot on it how great does it need to be? let me know what you guys think and im hoping to lower the frontend soon as i get a couple bucks to do it this whole not being able to walk/work has really slowed down progress
