71 GMC K20 "Green With Envy"

I've wanted to do a project like this for a long time. I was the envious one every time I see a resto going down the road, so when I found this project to take on I thought the name would suit it. This is my first time posting so hopefully this will work right. I've been reading alot of the threads on this sight and have to say its really cool to be able to look in on projects to help out, so thanks in advance for help you've already given.

I bought this the first of January and hope to be done by next year at this time, or sooner.

Looks like a nice truck to work with. looks better than mine. I know what you mean by "you get to see so much more when it comes apart." I found a lot of not so nice surprises as I took it apart.

What kind of engine is in it?

Got the inside of the cab cleared out to see how bad the floor was. Looks like I got my work cut out.

DD1 It's a 350 out of a 71 dump truck only 80k or so I was told. Even with bad gas charged the battery and it fired right up yipee!

Its been sitting for at least 6 years and was used at Silver lake sand dunes before that, hence the harness seats.

The 350 I picked up was working, but i decided to have it rebuilt as I did not know what kind of shape it was really in. Turned out one of the intake valves was leaking and the pistons were shot. Glad I spent the bucks to get it done.

I just started a thread with my truck if you are interested in checking it out. It needs inner rocker panels, and has rust spots in some difficult areas under the hood.

nice that it fired up after 6 years. I like that they left the manual transmission alone. The idiots I got my truck from converted it to an automatic.

Ya this one is to they put a floor shifter in it. Not sure what I want to do with that yet. Thanks for the link I will check it out, as I said its nice to see where other people are with theirs I have already learned lots.

Worked on cab and box mounts tonight, the old girl gave up all but one bolt that had to be cut off. everything but the steering unhooked, hopefully the cab and box come off tomorrow then I can get started on the grimy stuff. The box supports are pretty solid but the cab mounts are not so good.

Any opinions on replacing the whole tub as apposed to just floor patches and new supports. I see there is a one piece that says it has all the supports. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Nice project! I'm rebuilding a 72 K20 at the moment also. Whats the deal with the dual belt pulleys on everything? Was there a hydraulic pump and/or aftermarket ac in there?

Well didn't get much done on the truck this weekend, ran service calls all day Sat. Did manage to get the box and cab off, and found a great deal on a 60 gal compressor. Spent most of the day today wiring and piping the compressor, its works great, and a lot quieter than that little one I was using. The frame looks like it will clean up pretty easy. Should be able to get the motor and tranny off tomorrow after work. Sure would make it go a lot faster without that four letter word.

Spent the rest of the day cleaning the work space so I can start right in tomorrow.

My K20 floor was in pretty bad shape and I am sorry I chose to just patch the areas. It took way longer than I thought. Especially the driver's side. Still not done grinding welds smooth on the bottom. I wanted the floor to look original. Yours appears to be as bad as mine or worse. Would seriously consider replacing the whole floor with the $500 replacement floor. Think you will be much happier in the end.

Got both drive shafts, exahust, and motor out tonight. Time to get my POR 15 ordered. Any one know how much it will take to do the frame, and does it take one or 2 coats? I'm thinking the 4 quart deal they have. I also read that it should have top coat for U-V protection how far does that go, or is it necessary on the frame?

I like buying the 6 pack of the semi gloss black POR15 and then use 1 small can at a time so it does not start to cure. I can't remember how many small cans I went through. Was at least 8 of the little cans. A little goes along way.

My frame looked much better with 2 coats. I first had the frame sandblasted and then used the POR15 Marine clean etch and then top coated with a brush.
Pretty amazing how you can brush it on and when it dries it looks like it was powder coated. Stuff is awesome!!!

Saturday power washed frame in the driveway after marine clean treatment. Was ok till the sun went down and my pants froze. Worked real good hooking the hose to hot water.

Sunday applied prep and ready let it set for 45 min then rinsed with 2 gallon sprayer, and dried with heater for about 4 hrs.

Got most of the frame painted first coat. That was one quart didn't want to open another so I turned up the heater to let it dry. Need to take the wheels off to get at the rest. Should be able to get to that tomorrow. Love the POR that stuff is great, but it sure does smell. Thank god for the mask. Wish it was warmer so I could do it outdoors.

I'm going to have to fix motor mounts, I think the po must have only ran at the dunes with the hood off because the fan is to high in the current position, and they cut crossover out. Maybe they had a bbc instead of this motor.
Guess I'll try to find a new cross member.
