Project: Retirement

Well where do I start... Myself and a close friend of mine whom are both 21, have acquired a 67 GMC dually flatbed from another close friend's uncle. This isn't any 67 though, it was purchased by this uncle's brother in 67 and was then used as a work truck during the establishment of an excavating company in '71 which is still in business today. Years later, the owner gave the truck to another one of his brothers who used it for casual work, but work nonetheless. Then in 1990, two lads were born, not knowing they would own this truck 21 years later... but by this point the truck had been given to the most recent owner, who used it as an orchard truck for a 9 acre 75 year old family apple orchard among others up until 2006 when the family orchard was torn down for his new 9 acre garden/cafe and yes this truck was there working too. Up until November it has been used as a plant/tree transporter and garden truck for the garden/cafe business and has been since retired from duty. Over the years my friend and I grew up with the owners nephew and always watched this truck put along down the street hauling all types of things. The truck was famous for not being able to go faster than 60km/h, it has been painted 4 times, first it was 505 woodland green, then was yellow then was red then was the current color is it now, it has been the current color as long as I've known it. It has had 4 engines, not sure on tranny count. We have both known the owner and whole family most of our lives, so when we found out that he had finally retired it after 40 years we absolutely had to have it. So just last week, my friend gave this guy a call and asked what he wanted to do with it, he said its off to the wreckers but that was interrupted by a quick "ok give it to us we want it" and just like that we acquired this truck at the cost of $1.00 or .50 cents each haha. Our plan is to make the truck as stock as possible, but with some special touches, so I imagine I will be here asking many questions about the truck for help. My guess is it came stock with a 350 4spd, and yes it still runs. we checked the VIN and I tried decoding it but the VIN doesn't even make sense... anyways I got some pictures for you guys so enjoy, and over time there will be plenty more pictures to come. absolutely cannot wait to get started on this project. We like to think of this build as a retirement present for the truck. The best part about this all is that there is no deadline.

dont even know what engine this is

interior has seen better days

i've seen some wear spots on these trucks before, but this takes the cake by far for me

Welocome from Iowa! Don't know much about GMC's, but think that history is very cool. Maybe a 327 engine? Check for numbers on the block, back driver's side. Are you planning on keeping the shop logo on the doors?

Re: Project: Retirement

I would really love to redo that company sign but we havent decided yet, the phone number on the bottom hasnt existed for over 20 years haha, the drivers door needs replacing but we'd like to keep the top part of the inner door panel where its worn out and transplant it onto another door. Thats 40 years worth of a left arm resting while at work!

Re: Project: Retirement

Cool if they let you use the shop logo if you wanted to keep it for memory sake. To keep the inner top of the door, check out my build thread. I have a door we've already cut that piece off to put onto another door. Though our door styles may be different.

Re: Project: Retirement

Sounds like a very cool project. I have 2 67's now and know a little about them, the only V8's available in 67 were the 283 and the 327, a lot of these came with 6's. if the VIN starts with CS it was a 6, CE was a V8.

And welcome aboard from Sunny Central Florida!

Re: Project: Retirement

I have some updates on the trucks history! I was pretty close haha the truck was bought new in 67 by the guy that lives across the street from me!! It was then sold to the guy that started his excavating company in 71. I cannot believe the original owner literally lives across the street from me i have so many questions to ask this guy... The person we got this truck from lives almost as close. What ive been told is that this truck is indeed an actual 1 ton and it came with a 396 BB? Is this possible? I thought all GM/Chev trucks 1/2ton to 1ton came with a 283 or a 327? Can anybody verify this? If it did come with a 396 stock i will be very happy haha

Re: Project: Retirement

decided to go and grab more pictures of the truck, had a minor inconvienence all day with my daily driver so it was starting to get dark but itll do

heres the buildsheet:

heres the VIN on the insurance papers:

heres the plaque on the inner drivers door:

passengers cab corner from inside:

pass side floor:

heres the floor directly below the pedals:

heres the drivers rocker:

back side of drivers door sill:

drivers cab corner from outside:

handy tool box (otherside is just as bad lol):

for those who wonder, this is how many km's were on it when it stopped working, not too many

better shot of company logo, weve decided to use it again but instead have it put onto a large magnet so it can be removed

also, when looking at the back passengers side of the motor for the numbers, am i looking at the exhaust manifold? or is it on the block?

Re: Project: Retirement

1ton, On your spid there is no optional engine listed. That means that the engine that came stock in your truck was the standard V-8. I think the standard V-8 was a 283 in 1967.

Re: Project: Retirement

Ok thanks for the info, I'll have to go to the original owner sometime soon and see what he says, hopefully he remembers 100%. To be honest I'm not too interested in having a sbc be apart of this build let alone a 283. I would rather see a bbc instead.

Don't even have to wonder if its a 283. The "corporate blue" paint and the long waterpump brackets tell me its a 75-79 motor.

I've just been gazing at all these pictures, particularly the cab corners. to me they look like they have already been replaced at some point and must have not been painted, would anybody else say the same?

Warren, I was talking about the original engine, Your talking about the engine in the pic. 1ton already said that the truck is on it's 4th motor.
