One thing I could add that may help Mbeef61

I worked in a Plant plant for a Few years,
For a Major manufacture of Automobiles.

They would give us a (Crater Test)
They would paint a Panel and hold it below our shirt sleeve.
Then shake our shirt sleeve and if the paint fisheyed it was Us causing the issue.

If a certain kind of underarm deoderant was used
or Armor-All or Tire shiner was on a persons clothes,

It would cause Paint defects down the line.

Also if any hint of silicone sealant is in the area will cause an issue with paint quality.
Also good info. I’m sure I could have prepped it better. I have gotten away with worse but apparently not this time haha.

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

hey there, it's been a while, I'm sure we are all Picasos by now

so wanted to share something with you all, I just got back from Oh' Reallys and check it out, OUR favorite KRYLON Semi-Flat got a face lift, is it the same paint? is it the same formula? is this KRYLON's idea of "innovation"? I hate it when they pull krap like this, took me a while to find it on they shelf, ha ha

this is what I was talking about in my earlier posts, that when you find a rattle can spray paint that you like, buy it all, buy all of it off the shelf, ha ha, cause you never know what may happen

this appears to sport the same RTA9203 part number

The past two years I've done a lot of paint testing with salt sog tests acid resistance, heat and cavity wax. Generally the first two things to fail in a salt fog chamber are are spray cans of Rustoleum rusty metal primer and self etching primer here is an inexpensive way to test it yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhW3...ature=emb_logo

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

also they changed the nozzle, it now sports one of them comfort spray from any direction nozzles (pronounced: you can no longer clean it by spraying the can upside down until clean air comes out) wonder if a couple days from now I will be able to shoot it again as I have not used the entire can

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

a quick update, so I tried spraying again after I first used it partially then allowed the can to sit in my garage for a week or so, and it sprayed just fine, I share this with you all cause they changed the nozzle and the new one is not one of those flip the can upside down and spray until clean air comes out trick in order to clean it for next time

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

so another update on the new version of this paint and it aint good

so after anther week or so I go to shoot a rollpan as I have done time and time again over the last I don't know 7 years and with the old style paint can I could let the paint sit on a shelf for months then go to spray it and it would spray as good as new each and every time, well not this new stupid can with its new dumb nozzle that you can't clean by just flipping it upside down and spraying until clear stuff comes out

so yeah the can now squirts and splatters and shoots a horrible tiger stripe pattern, it was so bad I caught myself looking at the can to make sure I grabbed the right one, that really surprised me and underlined how crappy it has become

I don't know how I feel, let down I guess, I mean why mess with a great product, all I can say is it fell into the planned obsolescence scheme in order to waste material so they can sell you more

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

and beating a dead horse to death, check out these price differences

Pep Boys first - $7.99

I'm doing this cause they still show the old cans, so if indeed they still have the old product I'm going to buy them out today

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

I always knew NAPA was expensive, but I go there sometimes cause they are the closest to me and also it's the big hub store so they almost always have the parts

Napa = $11.24

Funny you say that

The Parts stores Around here are (All) Sister company's.

The one and only Parts store when I was growing up

By the way I still have not.

That is Grown up I say (Qutoe from FogHorn Leghorn) .

There was a Great Machine shop in the back.
The other Store rebuilt Starters and Alt and Generators.

There is still a few old guys and one girl that work at these 2 places

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

so I managed to find some more of the old style paint cans, ie new old stock, so lets stare and compare

Note how the old style red nozzle rotates [yes you can twist it 360° around] allowing you to fan our vertically in one position and horizontally in the other, well the stupid new style white nozzle on the left just shoots a horrible rounded typical spray paint rattle can pattern

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

so I got some gloss black for the frame of my '71 truck (as I learned matte on the frame just don't look good) and I got some semi flat for the inner fenders and the radiator core

the plan is to set a day aside to painting and spray out all the cans, since I still like the hue of the paint just not how it is only good for one continuous shoot (in other words you can't use the same can a week later type of thing)

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

I followed your advice and used this stuff to paint my axle housing with semi-flat. I am pleased with how it came out. Thanks for the recommendation. Paid $8.99 per can at Riebes. The primer had the old style nozzle, and the paint was the new style.

Re: Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

I'm going to be installing Slosh Tubz on my 86 in the near future and want to go with a factory engine bay black. Would you all say the semi-flat black is a good match to the factory black? It looks like a nice choice in general. I just can't tell how well it would match what's already there.

Thanks for putting all the effort into this post. I haven't invested in an air compressor and painting equipment so it's spray cans for me.
