Question Where to find NP205?

Well,I am on a mission to find a np 205 t case for my shortbed K10.I havent had much luck finding just a transfer case locally and any I find online are to far away to pick up and they cant be shipped because of the weight.I am now considering buying a complete truck just for the transfer case.Ok,and now the question....What Chevy or GMC trucks came with a np 205 stock?I know they were in 71-72 4x4s stock and they were in 73-87's with a manual tranny,correct?But what years did they come with the NP205 with an automatic tranny?I need to know what years of trucks to concentrate my search on so I can find one.All the trucks I have found have only turned out to have Np203 t-cases and I am not putting one of those in my shortbed.I guess if I still cant get one I will shove in of my spare rockwell T221's in it till I do find one but the longer I am without it the longer the truck is apart and I am trying to get it back together ASAP.So if someone could tell me what years and models to look for I would really apprectiate it.

Re: Where to find NP205?

Must be a shortage in Indiana, I'm always tripping over them in the local wrecking yards. BTW I have about 7 of them---all rebuilt with various adaptors.

Re: Where to find NP205?

Yeah,I have and came up with no luck.I did however find a very cheap 72 LWB K10 that has a np205 and for the price I am considering buying it and besides getting the transfer case I will have another lifted 4x4 to add to my stable if I keep it after I pull the transfer case.

Re: Where to find NP205?

Dustin, I bought mine for 50 bucks, along with the SM465 it was mated to, out of a 1970 K10 and any other parts I wanted off the truck. (never did get any parts off of it ) The t-case works, but it's got some play in it, and probably could use a rebuild someday. I'd look around in the classifieds, and keep checking junkyards.

Re: Where to find NP205?

Sounds like you got a good deal there.I am still checking around but havent had much luck finding one.If I was looking for a np203 there would be 205s everywhere so maybe I should temporarily change my search

This is from the "short episode on the soapbox" thread-

I'm not sure that is true - I have a 4 spd in my 75 K25 & its a NP203. It's been converted to part time like it should have been in the first place, but none the less a 203. I would think the confusion would be with the 205 & 208 since thay have the same shift patterns - the 203 has from front to back: Low Lock, Low, N, Hi, Hi Lock. Just sharing what little I know.

Re: Where to find NP205?

Not all 205s will fit either, as the early married GM cases had the figure-eight bolt pattern (what you need). Later ones went to the more standard 6-hole round pattern.

Re: Where to find NP205?

I dont think my truck could make it the far to be honestYou are talking about that Jimmy that Randy had for sale right?I figure I might be able to go a distance to a certain point for a whole truck because I can never own too many trucks but my yard cant hold many more trucks scattered in hundreds of parts and it will be time to start mowing before too many more months and grass grows faster than I can build trucks.

205's were available clear up into 1991 in 1 ton 4 door pickups. As far as finding them behind an automatic after 72 most of them were in 1 tons behind a TH400. I am sure there may have been some available in the early 70's behind a TH350 after 1972, but i am not sure of the cutoff date. One from a 4 speed will work as long as you change out the front input shaft. As far as the front driveline hookup goes, I think in 77 was the year the front output changed from a yolk 10 spline unit to the stronger 28 spline square flange unit. There were other changes later, but i am not sure of all of them and what they entailed. Rear output slip yolk was added in the 80's along with a different shifter mouning plate that incorperated a nylon bushing to be inserted between the linkage for the shifter. I upgraded the one i am putting in my 86 because i hate shifter rattle. I also installed the shift rail switch, so my 4x4 light would come on when it is engaged into 4 wheel drive.

For those of you wanting to add an indicator light that lets you know when you are in 4 wheel drive, the part number is 15594176 for the switch that screws into one of the shift rail holes.

Hope this helps somewhat even though i don't know all the details.

Re: Where to find NP205?

Thank you for the info,I think the best bet at the time would be to look for a 67-72 with a np205 and know I have the right t case

Re: Where to find NP205?

I have a 205 from behind a turbo 350 out of my 72 parts blazer. I'd like 150 out of it. I live just south of Interstate 74 4 East of Illinois.
Thanks Troy

Re: Where to find NP205?

What trans are you planning on running? (Or did I miss that part?)

Anyway, just FYI, there are 4 different input designs for the 205 in GM trucks that I know of.
Your best bet is to get a 205 that was originally behind whatever transmission you're planning on running.

Here's the input/trans combos that I know of;

205 Input Trans
10 spline male SM465 4 speed
27 spline male TH350 Auto
32 spline female, (short) TH400
32 spline female, (long) Later model 4 speed? (Not sure if these are still the SM465 and the "long" female input may have also been behind some TH400 transmissions? Not to familiar with the "long" input.

Here's some more;
the 10 spline and 27 spline male input 205's use a smaller input bearing than the 32 spline female input.
So, for example, if you were going to run a 4 speed, (10 spline), or a TH350 trans, (27 spline), the 32 spline input 205 cannot be used. You can't change the input to the smaller bearing inputs because the hole in the case for the bearing is to big.
Now on the other hand, if you were to go the other way around, you can always have the smaller bearing hole machined out to fit the larger input bearing.

Hope you can make sense of all that....

Here's an old thread of mine that might interest you also;

I am pretty sure at this point that I am putting a TH350 in it.I would have liked to put a standard tranny in it but I dont want that low geared SM465 in it and I dont want to modify the truck all that much for a 5 spd so a TH350 will go in it.

Thanks to all and Merry Christmas!
