I’d say to go with what you’re comfortable with. My engine came with an Edelbrock, but I switched to a Holley simply because I already understood Holley carburetors and didn’t have to learn a new platform after I rebuilt the engine.

I like what Grumpy said, but I can’t confirm it

They each have there place. Race car, Holley all the way. Street/strip, the Edelbrock or Holley are great. Street truck? Q-jet. And if you really want to learn about carbs the Q-jet can work in a race car environment as well. But I like running the OEM steel fuel lines with no rubber under pressure. The Right Stuff makes a pump to carb line for the Edelbrock and Holley and Q-jets were both factory so you can run the reproduction OEM lines for those as well. But the single fuel bowl of the Edelbrock or Q-jet is better for lightly used vehicles. Especially for farm truck crap like I have the most of. Hard to get the secondaries open to refresh the fuel. Bottom line, Q-jet and learn how to tune it.

That question leads to more questions.

If you are asking, I guess you are not intimately familiar with carburetors. I'm not either. I have found that NOONE knows how to rebuild or tune a carburetor. So, you are on your own. Also, fewer and fewer people are going to be familiar with them in the future.

I have rebuilt a couple of carbs on old trucks that had supposedly been rebuilt by "a guy who knows carbs" and they were not repaired anywhere near correctly.

With that said, if you just want a carb for a <300 hp buy a low end carb from edelbrock or Summit that is pre tuned for SBC.

Not having a carb on the truck when I got it, I decided to go with an Edelbrock 1406. I have read all of the posts on the varying carbs and to me it just boils down to personal preference.

I also have an old NOS Demon 650 cfm carb, but I think I will start out with the Edelbrock and maybe one day switch to the Demon (after a good once over) if I get the itch. BTW I will be replacing this motor with a crate 350 4 bolt main.

I ran a 390 CFM Holley [R8007] for 25 years -- on a 292 in a '68 C/10 -- then went to a 500 CFM Edelbrock [1404] after a rebuild. The Edelbrock is a lot easier to tune and doesn't blow out Power Valves with every backfire.

I hate my 1406, always chasing a flat spot. Get it good on low end ,then get a flat spot somewhere else. Pay for carb then need a fuel pump, then need special springs and needles. I,m going back to a Q-jet for my stock 350

It depends on what the engine will be used for. for a daily driver that I did not want to mess with at all, I would lean towards Edlebrock, if I was building it for more of a muscle car (street / strip) car, Holley All day long because it is easier to fine tune it.

My truck still has the Q-jet that it was born with. Never saw a reason to change it. As Grumpy said, the sound when those big secondaries open is addictive.

I went with a 600 holley spreadbore carb. The spreadbore carb can bolt right on to stock manifold. The holley has a much faster throttle response than the quadrjet.

Q-Jet set up properly without a worn throttle shaft will do everything well.

I bought a new Barry Grant Road Demon Jr years ago and never could get it to work. 3 different vehicles, 3 different engines, sent it back to Grant and they re-worked it. No different. Maybe I just had a dud. When I was reading up on them, someone said they had problems with metal shavings inside the carb that never got cleaned out. I ended up giving it away.

I have a Holley on a small block F@rd and on my 85 K20, an Edelbrock on a Pontiac 400, a Quadra Jet on another Pontiac 400, and Quadra Jet on a 350 Chevy. They all work well, but the Quadra Jets seem to dry up faster than the others while sitting for a day or two. They are the oldest set-ups, as well, compared to the more recent builds with the Holleys and Edelbrock.

The Pontiac with a Quadra Jet will be next to get restored and it will keep the Quadra Jet...I grew up with it and it had that delay in initial throttle response, but a fraction of second later and it was at home again with that deep secondary WHAAAAAAAAA!

Depends on what intake your using the performer i have for my vortec heads is a square bore so I went with edlbtock carb I remember buddy's f$#% blowing power valves in his holley
Holly efi seems to have a very short lifespan from threads and youtube reviews

I would like to make mine efi looking for a ramjet or marine vortec intake
