It’s in and ALIVE. 1965 SBC 283 lopey cam.

See my other post for full specs.
Rebuilt 1965 SBC 283 with 268H Comp Cam.
Here’s the video after first start up (in the truck) today.
Previously had a run stand break in.

Congrats Lugnutz, always a little bit of a pucker factor when firing up new motors. I watch them like a hawk for the first 1000 miles, then start to relax.

It looks great. I think a 283 and a stick shift is the perfect set up for pleasure driving. It sounds like it's running great,, but I would love another clip when you get the exhaust finished.. What do you have in mind for that anyway?

I love the sound of that engine. Makes me want to build my 64-65 283 to the same specs

Re: It’s in and ALIVE. 1965 SBC 283 lopey cam.

Thanks for the nice comments.
It really runs great. Video of first real drive. https://youtu.be/9dVmSbD_5VQ
I’ve been tinkering with the timing trying to make the cold start pop right off (like it did on the run stand).
I need some advice please.
I have a standard points distributor converted to Pertronix 1181LS. No more points or condenser.
Rochester 2Jet carb I rebuilt myself. Ran fine on the run stand on two different 283 SBC.
I set initial timing at 16* advance with vacuum advance line plugged and idle RPMs at 700.
Then I lock it down and reconnect the vac advance line to the dizzy and RPMs jump up about 250 RPMs. I then back off the idle screw to get 700 RPMs again. The timing light shows about 25* of advance.
So the manifold vacuum is strong enough to pull an additional 9* of vacuum advance at idle.
I have no idea what the timing is at higher RPMs. I’ll need a better timing light to figure that out.

What’s next?
Pic is for your entertainment.

Re: It’s in and ALIVE. 1965 SBC 283 lopey cam.

My longbed has the original type carb and it pretty much draws the vacum advance for all it's got at idle.
I too have a basic timing light and instead of upgrading the light I just bought a Mr. Gasket degreed balancer tape form my local O'Reilly auto parts. It has been on there for a while now and seems to be staying put and it made dialing in the timing a breeze. I think I paid like 12 bucks for it.

Re: It’s in and ALIVE. 1965 SBC 283 lopey cam.

Nice 283 Jay ! Hey im going to be putting a set of rebuilt camel hump 461 heads on my 283 along with a cam, iron 327 intake and a 4 bl quadrajet to match and Im wandering how you like the 268H comp cam ? Im trying to keep the engine looking period correct . I been researching cams for this small bore engine and Im leaning towards the comp Xe256, lunati voodoo 10120700lk or the old Z28 cam 3863151 .
This engine has a fresh bottom end .030" over, I bought it used with low flowing 896 heads as my block was cracked. The block numbers matched my cracked block so its period correct 1966-67. I popped heads off had a quick look at cylinders and lapped valves and put new seals on and threw it back together but it feels underpowered everywhere pretty much lol . I should make some decent gains with cam, heads, intake and carb im hoping. I know these 461 double hump heads are larger 60-62cc from what ive read so hope my deck height is decent and i wont be down on compression too much. i'll do some measuring when i tear into it. The camel hump heads were on my original block so figured id utilize them. Anyways hoping to find a good cam spec for this build
Im running a camaro T5 and 3:73 gears

The 283 mentioned in this thread had to go back to the builder after 600 miles of driving. They tore it down under warranty and rebuilt it. It had a faulty lifter.

So while the other engine was out of the truck, I swapped in a different 283. It’s a fresh Jasper rebuilt 1966 283 with powerpack heads and a GK 930 cam. I think they perform about the same. I am also running a Camaro T5 (assembled in an S10 case and tailshaft) with 0.72 OD and 3.73 rear axle and 29” diameter rear tires. Neither 283 likes a slight hill in OD unless RPMs are 2300 or higher. I usually cruise at 65 MPH which means I’m at 2000 RPMs. So I’m downshifting on small hills.
I’m swapping in an S10 T5 with a 0.86 OD gear. That will bump the RPMs up enough for less downshifting and I doubt the MPGs will suffer much.

Re: It’s in and ALIVE. 1965 SBC 283 lopey cam.

How do you like the other 283 in the lower gears 1st-3rd ? Does it get the truck moving quickly ? My camaro 1st gear is 2.95 and 5th is .63 I dont mind downshifting to 4th as Im sure it will be lugging alot in 5th with my 3:73 rear ratio. I have a s10 t5 in it right now the ratios are terrible when i pull the engine to do the engine work i will be swapping the camaro gear box on and the tail housing from another s10 t5 i have . Just have to relocate the speedo gear.

Re: It’s in and ALIVE. 1965 SBC 283 lopey cam.

I have an S10 gear set in my other truck and I really like it. That truck has a 230ci engine and drives great.

Let’s compare the Camaro V8 gears in my 1965 to the S10 gears in my 63 C10.

Camaro
V8 gears / S10 gears
2.95 / 4.03
1.94 / 2.37
1.34 / 1.39
1.00 / 1.00
0.73 / 0.86

I agree that the S10 1st gear is a little annoying. Too low, but I can live with it. The 2.95 Camaro gear is perfect.
The rest of the gears are pretty close.
If you try to swap the S10 0.86 gear onto the Camaro shaft it becomes a 0.63 gear. I’ve done the math.
