Fold down license plate holder

I'm looking for recommendations for a solid fold down license plate holder that would work with the TripPlus Automotive role pan. From the location of the filler neck, it looks like the hole behind the license plate will be at the top - center area of the opening where the license plate will mount. Thanks.

A lot of cars from the 80's like a Chevy Caprice had fold down license plates. I used one on my last build (48 truck) with a roll pan.

I used one like this from eBay. It worked great.

Re: Fold down license plate holder

Thanks. The holder on Ebay looks like it mounts at the bottom correct? I'm concerned the area where the bracket mounts isn't big enough for that bracket. The dimensions for the area is 13" wide and 5.25" tall. My CO license plate is 6" tall so if the bracket is roughly the size of the plate, it will hang down below the edge of the roll pan too far to bolt it on? Did your roll pan have the same dimensions?

I'm pretty sure you can set them up as flip up or fold down. I don't recall the dimensions of my rollpan . You can trim it to fit I bet.

Ok. Thanks. I need it to fold down or else it will be hard to use I think.

I later remade mine out of a flat plate of 1/8" steel with a small hinge at the bottom. I added magnets to the upper corners to hold it closed to the roll pan. I don't recall why I later made my own. That might be better than modifying an off the shelf solution.

Thank you
Marc

Re: Fold down license plate holder

Note I had to correct this as I was way off>>> ( don't think any 80's cars still used the behind the plate gas filler. ) it looks like a lot of GM rigs used the behind the plate gas filler a lot longer than I remembered.

Some of the aftermarket ones I am finding that cover hidden hitches say that they are pretty flimsy.

Not as cheap as the aftermarket ones but this 69 Camaro unit should work pretty well.

Summit has it for 23.99 rather than 39.00 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/GMK-4012-885-68

48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Fold down license plate holder

If you ordered an oem style one the main difference might be the locations of the mounting holes between models of vehicles. When you are drilling your own that is a non issue.

Re: Fold down license plate holder

I'm going to have to back up and say that they used them a lot longer than I thought. My wife had a 79 Caprice for several years.

Re: Fold down license plate holder

Late, as usual, but here's mine.

I think the holder is from a G2 Camaro. I weakened the spings so that the license plate would lay horizontally while I filled the tank - I remember fighting with them and trying to wedge the gas cap to hold it open.

The magnets sit where the rubber-bumpers would be on the Camaro. I had to play with it a little to get the plate to be a uniform distance from the roll pan.

The lights are from Kuryakin (I see I didn't hook up the ground - added that to my list)

Thanks for the reply. I think that's the holder I ordered. The magnet idea I like and you are the second person to mention it. I looked at Kuryakin. Looks like nice stuff. What lights are your referring to? Are those screw in lights holding the plate? If so, that's cool and do you have the part number? Also, is that a rubber boot around the opening or just a rubber strip?

Re: Fold down license plate holder

Yes, the license plate is held on with these Kuryakyn led bolts-

https://www.kuryakyn.com/products/52...te-bolt-lights

The edge of the hole for the filler neck is some stuff called "trim loc", not a rubber boot
