1948 Bed pics and Questions

Well I decided to unbox all my new bed parts and do a mock up to see what it looks like. The truck is starting to take shape slowly. Anyhow, after moving the rear end back a little it still looks like about 2 more inches to center the rear wheel better.

My question is, this is a stock 3600 chassis and when I put the bed on with my Ford Explorer rear end, I had to run a 1.5" wheel spacer to clear the bed. Luckily I had a set of these sitting around. Has anyone else run into this? I am also toying with cutting sides to install a wheel well on the side so that I have no issues once it is done. I do have 10" wide rims on the back but even when I mocked up the 8" front on the back it still looked close.

Anyhow looking for thoughts and ideas. It is all on the joy of doing a build.

Pic of issue. Hard to see but tire is less than finger width away from bedside and that is with 1.5" wheel spacers installed.

Also, anyone have a link showing bed mount instructions? The 2nd pic will show I bought a rubber bed mount kit but still seems to angle down a little.

Re: 1948 Bed pics and Questions

You are right, the axle needs to go back a bit and probably close to 2 inches but what I would do is figure out exactly where I wanted the wheel centered and not be hung up on an exact measurement. Get it so it looks perfect in your eyes and nail it down.

You might be able the 8s but it will be close. I ran 10s on my '54 but needed a 2" tub for good clearance. If it where me I would add a 3/4" to 1" spacer to raise the front of the bed a little.

Re: 1948 Bed pics and Questions

Is the bed in the correct location? From the pics it looks like there more than normal space between the front panel and the cab. If it could move forward it would center the wheels better.

Re: 1948 Bed pics and Questions

It should be. Lined it up with holes in frame. Front cross will only had one set of holes in frame. Will have to measure between cab and box. Plus no way to move forward as the front edge of fenders are right at the running boards too.

The explorer 8.8 is def a squeeze. I'm running spacers 1.5" with 8" wide rears, they still rub just a bit on turns.
Not sure how far you've already moved the axle back, but as was stated already, just line it by what looks good to you and don't stress much over the numbers.

Thanks for pic. Truck looks awesome. What blocks or spacers did you use under cross sills to get the level height? I bought the poly blocks but looks like I will need to add some to get the right level height. Also, what is the measurement from the lip below the back window to top of front part of the bed. This will give me an idea on how close or far off I am.

I used a wood block kit I purchased from either Classic Parts or Jim Carter. I measure lip to top as 9-1/4" . BTW, the slope you see on the panel above the running board/below the bed is due to the fact that it has not yet been fastened up front.

Haha. Thanks. I actually think it is a mess right now. All I know is that I need a bigger garage because I have way too many toys.
