I took the old bumper and cut it up. Tried to make it fit, but everything I did looked terrible. So I’m going with the original bumper. It looks the best.

that sliver bumper is pretty sweet, maybe a touch narrowed and cut the frame back behind the chin sheet metal.

Re: My 56 build

Some progress. I’ve decided to hold off painting until spring when I can have proper ventilation ( extensive painting that is, still priming some). I still have some prep work to do. Here’s the inner fenders bodyworked and now in primer. Ready for paint.

After everything is prepped I’m going to install a dod delete kit in the engine. I just had my new gmc 5.3L in the shop to have all 16 lifters replaced. One lifter collapsed and lost a cylinder. So replace it before it’s a problem. I Guess this means I get to put a cam in it… so why not an 6.2 cam. Easier to do now while it’s on an engine stand.

Re: My 56 build

I’ve been working on the new bed wood. It took about a month. I received it as rough cut 1”. Here’s a few pictures of the results. Last picture is for comparison. It’s the pine I started with. I originally had stainless angle on inner fenders, but didn’t care for how it looked. So I went to 7 boards with a wider outer board. Clean cut, single board around the inner fender looks cleaner

Re: My 56 build

Time to make exhaust tips. Borrowed a TIG welder from my brother. My first experience with such a beast. Three weeks of practice and I have one side welded. Just need to finish work the weld and polish everything. Than tackle the other side.

Re: My 56 build

that looks awesome. will you polish it or accent paint it? I would only worry about it getting hot and blistering the paint around it, especially if there is filler involved in the surrounding area. maybe use a thick gasket between it and the fender? will you use a flex pipe prior to the entry of the pipe to the bezel to keep possible rattles down

Plan is to polish all the stainless. That’s why I’m TIG welding… or tying too. . Not sure how I’m going to protect the paint to stainless contact. Some type of thermal gasket. Hoping I’d doesn’t get too hot. There is no direct contact between the exhaust and the tip. We’ll see. I’m hoping the exhaust doesn’t move too much either… but, I’ll find out. Everything I do is an experiment.

Re: My 56 build

you could look for some exhaust gasket sheet and cut your own
you could look for some silicone heat resistant gasket sheet and cut your own
I would opt for the silicone sheet personally
if you find the exhaust pipe shakes around and causes rattles you could use a flex pipe somewhere close to the exit and then clamp the pipe so it doesn't move so much with engine torque etc, or you could wrap the inside of the trim pieceor outside of the pipe that sits inside there with some silicone sheet
just some thoughts, you may not even have an issue with rattling so no use what iffing it to death first. haha. I would insulate the trim part though, paint ain't cheap

Re: My 56 build

don't under estimate the amount of heat.

I notched the rear bumper on my 67 Tempest for tail pipes and now the chrome starting to discolor. just an FYI

Re: My 56 build

Used a couple of engine stands to hold the box sides upright. Worked well. Second picture is after sealer.

Re: My 56 build

Another day of painting. Doors, hoods underside, and inner fenders in color. Last round of two tone. Nice to be done with that. Takes a lot of time taping. Front clip is next. Getting closer

Thanks, I think the most difficult part of painting a vehicle while disassembled is figuring how to hang everything. I happen to be storing a friend’s engine stand and I own one. The 2 have been very useful!

Only one so far. Picked that one out with tweezers. I have the garage set up like a paint booth. Filters, airflow with fans. It takes 2.5 hours to clean and prep the garage. That sucks! You still get small dust, but you get almost the same results as a booth. I’m going to cut n buff everything anyway.

Re: My 56 build

I cut n buffed the underside of the hood before I flipped it over to paint the blue. This way I don’t have to set it upside down on the blue. Also painted the front fenders and upper and lower valances (not really sure what they’re called). Today was my last day spraying blue. One more day spraying bronze. Then painting will be done. Progress
