My rusty 58 stepside build

ok here goes! I bought this a few months ago without even seeing it in person, i was deployed and cruising craigslist. Needles to say the truck was a little worse than i thought when i returned to the states ! But i am not a person who is easily scared ! So i started workin on it 2 weeks ago ... These pics are from craigslist.... They are also perfectly taken to hide the big flaws..

I did find some fenders, but one of them looks like yours did before you decided to go to single headlight set up...

i played with my eastwood mig 135 for the first time on the above panel, where the fender strut mounts. It was all rotted out, so i patched it up..

Re: My rusty 58 stepside build

kidding. i've seen/owned worse. i was voted most likely never to own a truck with 4 fenders in my high school yearbook
tear it down, sand blast and prime everything and go from there.
floor rust is from a leaky cowl vent, if you do only one mod... shave your cowl vent.

Re: My rusty 58 stepside build

That's a shame it was worse than expected. The good thing is most everything is available to fix it. just don't get too discouraged and it will all come together'

Re: My rusty 58 stepside build

Thanksfor the faith Kim..I love metal work, so I am not to nervous.. My bigest worry is knowing how to remake a panel without having and original to go by ..

Re: My rusty 58 stepside build

I have made some progress... Installed a new battery, made sure i had my wires routed correctly. Removed the fuel tank, cleaned it out ,found out the float on the sending unit was leaking, so i made a fairly suitable sub..lol.. Then reinstalled all parts with new hardware..tried to crank the motor again but found no fuel prime,a dn no spark..So after i go out for an early morning archery hunt i am going to pull the fuel pump and see if it's works as advertised.. Also i am goung to change my points out..

Re: My rusty 58 stepside build

This might not seem like a big deal to some , but it's a huge deal to me !! I had to run all the wires, and clean all the existing leads to the starter.. This is my first build so i am very exited ! I also make more time than most to work on my truck, i am married, but my wife encourages my effort. Also we have no children, and i work 2nd shift. So my morings after the gym are spent pushing my build , not cutting corners though , but i am not a procrastinator, nor do i have any excuses.. I have been in love with the 1958 apache since i was a child.. It's just me and by good friend turning the motor over for the first time !

Re: My rusty 58 stepside build

I replaced the points today and pulled the fuel pump off, i wasn't getting any prime after i reinstalled my fuel lines. The fuel pump was quite dusty inside. So am cleaning and rebuilding that tonight.. I also cut out my passenger floor board, and i also cut out the passengers side rocker step combo.. Oh and also almost cut of my damn finger in the process !...lol

Re: My rusty 58 stepside build

this is what i found inside the fuel pump..The pile of dust to the right was inside of it ! I removed the fuel lines and sand blasted them in and out...I had no spark when i was rolling the motor over in the earlier video, and i also had no fuel in my filter bowl..So i removed the pump and cleaned it out, i am hoping for the best. I tried to put the points back in the same exact adjustment location..We will see...
