Tips for cleaning emblems?

Getting ready to polish/buff a fender, so I removed the emblems and I noticed how stained they are. In this case like so many other things on this particular Blazer, stained a reddish-orange from years on having red mud/clay on them. I started with just hot soapy water and a brush, but the mud stains wouldn't come off. A quick pass with 0000 steel wool took it right off and chrome looks great. However, that only worked on easy to get to top and bottom. Just wondering if anyone has any tricks for getting down inside the letters. Brush and blue scotch pad wouldn't budge it. Thanks
