Re: Chevrolet or Pontiac?

Gotta go with Poncho. Had a '65 GTO in high school. Great memories in that car.

Rescued a '78 Trans Am. Still regret selling that one off.

Just sold the '76 "T'' top Cutlass and the '70 Nova SS last year. Miss them all. Even the '72 El Camino. I only had it for three months.

As much as I miss the Nova...the T/A is my most regrettable parting.

Re: Chevrolet or Pontiac?

Question for passenger car guys. A little research for approx. 70-72 Firebirds seems show 160 MPH speedometers were common or stock, while Camaro, Chevelle & GTO varied 120 MPH to maybe 150. I imagine SS would carry 160, not sure of any of it.

Did Firebirds have more top speed? Some guys claim to have buried them

I like em both. This was my 67 400 Firebird that I completely re-did and converted it to a Ram Air Clone, right down to the almost doesn't exist NOS air induction sheet metal/air cleaner.
Sold it to a pure Pontiac man who had a boat load of Pontiacs but no Firebird till he bought mine.

Re: Chevrolet or Pontiac?

Toss-up. I've had a

'64 Malibu SS 283 with a PG, and most options.
'64 Impala convertible- SHP327, close-ratio 4 speed, 3.90 posi, radio, tach, rear seat speaker, that is all.
'65 Malibu 2DHT that I put a 327 and THM 350 in. It would do 140
'65 GTO 2D post 389 4 speed 4.33 gears. Yup, that was fun!
'65 Tempest convertible with a 326.
'66 LeMans 2D post that got an RAIII 400. I blew that up in the Nevada desert at about 143 MPH, in '75 when the national speed limit was 55.
'68 Skylark California GS that I put a 305 Chevy with a 700 (4R). Kind of quick, got 18+ MPG commuting to work in rush hour traffic
'69 Camaro RS with a 327 and a 4 speed. Pegged it in Nevada on the way to Navy "A" school in Illinois in '73, and on the way back, in Texas.
'72 Le Mans Custom with a 2-barrel 400
'69 Nova with a 250 cu in 6 and a PG. I put AC and power disc brakes in it.

Not in sequential order. At this time in my life, I'd like to have that Nova back. We only sold it because we had 2 kids by then, and the wife didn't like straining her back getting them into their car seats in the back seat. It would be a perfect in-town car, these days. Have you seen the prices on any of these old cars? Mecum is ruining the old car market. There isn't a one of those that I sold for more than $2k.

Yeah, I only had a few, '63 283 Nova (w/my 327), '65 GTO, '68 442, and '63 Riviera. All 4spds except the Rivvy. Sold all for $3,000 or less, thinking "I can always get another"

IF I was a rich collector, I would embark upon gathering a list of favorite Pontiac performance cars. I think if I could only have one super collectible it would be a '61 Ventura SD

Re: Chevrolet or Pontiac?

I have never been a huge follower of the Camaro or Firebird. Of the two, I prefer the 'bird. To me the Chevelle/Lemans/GTO were much better options and again the Pontiacs were my preference. Now that I am "mature" (OLD), I prefer to do the trucks.

Always been a bowtie guy. I did have this '71 Bonneville. Only Pontiac I've owned. Darn good car. That 455 was hard on the back tires however!

Not sure about the early '70s but, the '78 T/A H.P. had to be dumbed-down because it smoked the lethargic Corvette...and Chevy boys wouldn't have it. Mine was bone stock engine & drive train. I was amazed at how quick it was. Especially off the line.

It would be cool if GM would bring back the T/A...on a Corvette platform this time.

Re: Chevrolet or Pontiac?

I've pretty much had all of them . Working in a body shop from 75 to 86 had lots of opportunities to buy damaged cars . The one I should have kept was a 69 Firebird convertible 400 with a 3 speed . But I did keep the Chevelle .

My mom had a 79 Silver Anniversary for many years, she LOVED that car. It flew, no doubt about it, but my 100+ MPH days were behind me. It had a 403 "Buick" engine. It had been stolen, so my step-dad in the auto body business ended up with it. It was like brand new when my mom got it, though it wasn't even a year old yet. I'd think there would be a BIG market for a TA like you say.

But Pontiac never made one of these though. Some Nova guys call these cream of the crop. My friend has one (not pictured), his exterior is beautiful stock but the rest is modified for speed, comfort and electrical components.

Agree on Camaros Tim, some are really beautiful. Even the name is smooth.

The 403 was an Oldsmobile engine NOT a Buick!

I had one in a 77 Cutlass Supreme

That Nova is about a stout li'l thing. Looks like it has a bad temper. My '63 Hardtop V8/4spd was white with blue interior and Cragars. I always wished I could grab an Acadian or a Beaumont. Those are the answer to this poll not listed... BOTH!

The Camaro name is very cool. I believe it came from a French-English dictionary as slang for the French word comarade, which the English word comrade comes from. So that's cool. The Camaro was meant to be your good friend. But an urban legend version says it's a small animal that eats Mustangs. Not a hard one to believe

Re: Chevrolet or Pontiac?

Caramount was in the running for the name in lieu of Camaro. Got to say I'm really glad - they made the right choice on that one.

Much of the info. applies to all 67-72 GM trucks, and to a lessor degree all 67-72 GM vehicles. My build thread, and more on the guide https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=730025

That would have been a big caramistake. What is a caramount, anyway? I searched before posting and the search engine wanted to give me results for "caromont". The word doesn't even exist. Just a bad way of adding the 'C' to the front of Paramount? Hokey to say the least. I can't imagine anything other than Camaro, other than Cirebird
