Valve cover decals?

Were engine displacement valve cover decals 307,350 etc. used on 67-72 trucks? I have seen plenty of air filter decals "keep all GM" and emission decals under the hood, but rarely valve cover decals.

Re: Valve cover decals?

Yes, my '72 custom camper is all original and has the original factory emissions/valve cover decal. It is made from steel stamped with the engine family, Cubic inch displacement and date of manufacture.

Re: Valve cover decals?

Aftermarket parts people have them listed in their catalogs. Some valve covers have a specific location that is visible, others were just attached with some degree of continuity of location...."that's close enough for government work!"

Re: Valve cover decals?

Thanks for the photos, I believe GMC called their engines Invaders. The small silver decal may be year specific, maybe 71-72 only? Sales brochures show the 68-69 engines with gold and black valve cover decals. Can't find anything for 67 and 70. Please post any more original engine photos with valve cover decals.

Re: Valve cover decals?

The invader stuff was GMC only. It has been discussed before that the trucks did not get invader --- stickers those were reserved for el camino- sprint engine line and are demonstrated in pictures shown in dealer/restore pack from GM. The metal sticker - emissions - is correct for trucks, more bb came with than sb and the bb also came with a tonawanda team 1 sticker located at the top of right hand valve cover. Other than those 2, I have not found any other stickers that are specific to trucks. In the picture of the ebay truck, I would agree with claims of originality w/ exception of invader sticker.

Re: Valve cover decals?

Went thru some old magazines and found this underhood shot of a new 69 Blazer being tested.Sure wish they took more color photos back then. Shows a 307 decal on the right valve cover. This may be the gold and black decal. Can't tell if there was one on the left side.

Re: Valve cover decals?

When I first got my 68 K20 it still had the original 327 gold and black valve cover decals. They were in poor shape but still there.

Re: Valve cover decals?

any one know of a place that make the emissions/valve cover decal? I checked LMC so far...no luck.. I also noticed a decal on top of the heater core box on that underhood shot in this post above. I have never seen a truck with that decal..Thanks

Re: Valve cover decals?

Check Brothers.
They have a fair selection of decals & may, or may not, have what you want.

You might also want to check with the Truck Shop & H & H Classic Parts.

They have all kinds of decals but they are not truck specific only GM specific.

Re: Valve cover decals?

The metal foil emissions tag shown above is the only type I would recognize as being original. They are however very unusual to see intact 38 years later.

Re: Valve cover decals?

Here's a few out of my archives : First is a 1969 Blazer. It's hard to tell, but you can barely make out a "5" in the 350 decal. Second is a 1970 402. Third is a 1972 GMC 350 - notice the decals on the front of the valve covers too.
Sorry for the poor pictures - didn't have time to get the scanner out!

Re: Valve cover decals?

Valve cover decals were year specific and truck make specific. The only way to learn the correct applications is finding archive photos or showing authentic low mileage trucks like we have been doing. There are some purists who want this information for an accurate restoration, and they don't believe all the "turbofire" decal stuff in catalogs is correct for trucks.

Re: Valve cover decals?

Thanks! My metal foil 402 emissions tag is still intact, but half of it is torn off. Doing a frame off and i am trying to make everything original.

Thanks,

I believe the metal foil type engine emission valve cover decal was started in 1972.

Re: Valve cover decals?

Mike, Classic Parts of America (Chevy Duty) carries them for 73-up, you might check and see if their supplier wouldn't like to make a run. Sorry, I do not know if they are just stickers or Metal ones, but if I was to bet, they are stickers. Trevor
