47 Chevy AutoX Truck

This is the '47 Chevy AD Truck that my Dad and I built together in 2009.

The plan was to build a truck for autocross events that would be a ton of fun for less than $1,000 or so. The plan worked, and after I won a few events we continued to make upgrades here and there in the search for more speed.

It started as a rough $50 farm truck that we put on a $200 S10 chassis using a few hundred dollars in spare parts and swap meet finds. The initial build took about eight months.

Since then the truck has went through a few phases. The 15" tires were never adequate so eventually the 15x10 Cragars and 400 treadwear tires made way for 17x11 Cragars with sticky autocross tires. Minor suspension tweaks turned into a full set of RideTech Triple Adjustable Coilovers, racing seats and so on.

Re: 47 Chevy AutoX Truck

The next phase took place during the Winter of 2011-2012 and included a revamped 350 SBC out of my ’82 Z28 Camaro. The flat tappet cam had a defective lifter and less than 1,000 miles on a fresh rebuild so we put in a used solid roller lifter cam from a circle track car along with the circle track intake and headers from the 305 SBC that was in the truck. Thd new combo made 390 RWHP. The old 305 always ran like a top, even up to 7,000 RPM, but it only had around 300 HP at the flywheel so the difference was noticeable.

The fenders came last, and my Dad did some fab amazing work to make them fit. They completely changed the look, but I was impressed with how they turned out.

Right now, the current project is trying to improve the front-to-rear weight distribution. The fuel tank is being moved to the rear of the bed, and I might experiment with some lead ballast.

The WC T5 is also being replaced because I got greedy and tried to bang 3rd gear at an autocross and sheared off all the gear teeth. The T5 was tough though because after pulling out the metal bits with a magnet and flushing it with diesel it survived a whole day of autocross and a 200 mile trip home minus 3rd gear.

I like this too. Bet the Porsche, Corvette and Miata guys have fits when you show up! When I get to it I am toying with the idea of setting my 64 Chevelle up for AC or open road closed course contests like the Silver State Classic.

It does turn some heads at SCCA events, especially when I beat the Corvettes and Miatas. At the last SCCA event I was something like 30th out 106 cars, which is not too bad considering I am still running street tires. Depending on the situation with the trans I might be trying a track day in August. Someday I will try an open road race like Sand Hills or Silver State.

I forget the track width offhand, but the wheelbase is approximately 101" based off my '82 Z28. The chop is around 3" with 9" sectioned out of the center of the cab and some material removed from the bottom of the door too.

Chassis was an '84 S10 Extended Cab

Re: 47 Chevy AutoX Truck

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

As for updates, the broken T5 has temporarily been replaced with another WC unit out of a V6 4th Gen F-Body, and the fuel tank is relocated to the rear of the bed to improve weight distribution

A few weekends ago I went to a track day orientation at Mid America Motorplex with my Dad, and I had a ton of fun running around the 2.23 mile roadcourse. I was able to hit about 135 MPH on the main straight, and the truck felt solid through the corners. It was the first time I trailered the truck to and from an event, but after breaking the previous T5, I didn’t want to risk being stranded several hours from home. Coincidentally, the truck ran fine, the water temperature stayed right around 210 degrees and the oil pressure readings were good too, but we had two flat tires on the trailer during the trip

My next event should be the Goodguys show at the Kansas Speedway in a few weeks

A few shots of my truck running autocross at the Kansas Speedway

It either rained or threatened to rain much of the weekend so I forgot about shooting some video, but I did get two GoPro videos of the front suspension

Yes, it was simple to design and build with materials on hand and performs rather well

i like the truck and all the custom body stuff you did to it
all the exposed body seams give it a little frankenstein look
though at 6'4'' i doubt you could shoe horn me in it
