VATS removal

Where's the best place to have the VATS removed to start an engine on a test stand.

Find a tuner in your area who you would work with for a full tune (you'd want one for the trans etc anyway) and just ask them if they can do a bench flash. i.e. flash without having the actual car there. The reason is that once you license the credits through HP Tuners, your licensed through the tuners dongle. Doing it through the same tuner, means you won't risk getting doubled on credits, and the tuner is also more likely to give you a break on costs if your return biz is built in. I'm assuming you have something on the test bed that your planning on putting into a vehicle.

Doing a flash for a bench-run only engine is a little different. If you need that, I'll set you up with my tuner.

Re: VATS removal

In this case I have an 01 4.8l in a truck that the steering column has been cut out of. I want to see if the engine runs so I know what to do with it. I plan on the full tune on the 6.0l going into my truck but for now I just need to see if the 4.8l runs. If it runs I will probably rathole it as a sparefor one of my boys truck since they both have 4.8l.

Re: VATS removal

You have to have a PC with tuning software hooked up to the PCM to remove the vats.

You can send the PCM out to the guy that runs the lt1swap.com web site. He can remove the VATS and other non-essentials for $75 that includes return shipping, takes about a week total from when you ship it out to when you get it back.

Don't see how that will help in a truck with no steering column.

Re: VATS removal

You can remove the VATS on the ECM yourself. Take your ECM and plug it into a running truck that takes the same unit. With the engine running in the truck with your ECM disconnect all the plugs in the body control module under the steering column and take the truck for a quick few minute drive. Stop the engine, remove your ECM and your good to go, no vats. I did this on my 5.3 ECM, worked perfectly.
