Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Winters in Knoxville are usually pretty mild , It may snow some but it melts pretty fast , Last year we got about 7" and it stayed for a day or two . But this storm coming looks like it's going to be a lot colder all this week and rain on Thursday . So It's time to get ready for it .

Yeah
All-ready plan for the dog to stay inside on some of those nights.

All she wants to do is go outside and lay in the sun today.

It will be a Different story if we do get the _now (White Stuff).

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

For us it's all about how and when the warmer wetter SW weather mixes with the very cold NW weather. Right now they say the SW will hit us first and last with probably freezing rain in the middle, Thursday into Friday. Then colder, like high of 28 on Christmas Eve (up from 18 overnight)

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I hope everyone can afford to heat their homes..

I figure if you break up the country into 100 regions, statistically one of them will have 100-year weather patterns every year. And we will no doubt hear about it since modern communication (internet) and the media doesn’t pass those up.

It’s supposed to be pretty mild here in California on Christmas. The last few weeks have been slightly colder than usual.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

We live on a one lane county road , The power goes out from falling trees more than it should , Twice just in the last two weeks , so when the power goes out we lose everything , Power , cable , internet and if it's out for a long time we lose cell service . I have a 4000 watt inverter in the truck and it will run the heater in the garage , a 32" analog tv and if I need it I can plug in my garage frig and micro wave . I'm out there most of the time anyway , But running the truck uses too much gas , after watching the news with this storm coming I started looking for a new generator and found this Champion 5000 just down the road at Tractor supply , Merry Christmas to Mrs Grumpy ! Honey , Look what I got you for Christmas ! Let it snow, Bring on the ice storm , I'm ready

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Our power go out all to often here . I have a 8500 Onan that pretty much runs the house but I’m going to get a propane standby 10k unit in the spring or summer . Getting to old to go out and hook it up and start it even though it has a battery start . I just tuned and changed the oil this fall so it’s good to go . My mom has a standby and it’s been great .

My little roadside find Champion generator I use for my garage shelter lights and little heater . The little Honda I use when I just need lighting in the shelter .

Yeah it's going to be chilly around here this week. Highs around 5 degrees. Makes good ice for the ice fishermen.

Just a reminder - carbon monoxide kills. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation for those portable generators.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

My power used to go out all the time. I think the cost of all the repairs was killing the power company so they upgraded to narrow crossbars and did a lot of tree trimming. I can't, knock on wood, recall the last time my power went out.

I don't think we'll be getting any snow. Probably ice

/\ This! A couple of ice storms ago, a family put a generator on the front porch with cords entering via a window but during the night enough CO got in via the gap that several died.

Now is the time to get some good heavy duty extension cords before the storm hits and they all vanish from the stores. Test out how you will connect everything. Good chance you will need more cords and/or multi-taps. Plan how they run in the house. Don't want to be warm during the storm only to have to make a run to the ER because someone tripped over a cord and busted open their head.

They stay outside when in operation . Long 10 gage cord for the little one . The one I use for the house is 20 feet away from the house and I have a 220v cut out that’s wired to the box I have to manually kill the main breaker so as not to juice the service line .

Also have duel carbon monoxide/ smoke detectors in the bedroom living room and basement

Here it is Monday evening, and on the news the weatherman starts off talking about Friday when bitter cold will come in. Rain will turn to snow as the cold blasts in at 40-50 mph. Teens at night, upper 20s for the high

I've been in that kind of cold in Idaho in the mid-70s. Actually, -28 with a wind chill to -60. I live in southern California now for a reason.

Here, just 30 miles south East of Chicago, we're expecting nearly a foot of the white stuff and sub zero temps for Christmas. I'm already looking forward to next summer, lol

Here is our forecast through Saturday:

I think they have already upped it to 6 to 9 in my area.... Being that cold it will be a dry snow, and with that much wind it will be a whiteout blizzard for sure.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

snow-bah!
winter dropped on us last nite.
a foot and a half of snow, minus 6 and 20-30 mph wind making it feel a hella lot colder. with the wind we got 2-3 foot drifts all around the house and down the street. snow day for me, but had to go dig the wifey's truck out at 5 am so she could get to work.
at least the wind is blowing most of the snow off the vehicles. look how clean my crewcab is, but there is a 3 foot drift on the drivers side from the snow dropping off behind it.

Low tonight forecast at -12F. Colder here than Novosibirsk, Siberia. With good clothes it’s not too bad.
