Re: Has anyone have any experience with sids drop axles?

We're putting a 4" drop Sid's axle in a '54 1/2 ton(I think it's a 4"...customer brought it to me), but we're only to the stage where the suspension is bolted up to the frame. It's a good looking piece, fit the truck good with only minor modifications(removed a couple of leaves from the spring packs).
When we lowered the chassis off the lift, the front running board brackets were just about 9" off the ground. This is with the engine and tranny in the frame but no core support or sheet metal mounted up.

I have one and I'm very pleased with it. I was lucky to find a used one that came with the steering arm and new style tie rod. It still took some sorting to get everything right, but it was worth the effort. One thing that helped the most was adding 6 degree caster shims between the axle and springs.

Re: Has anyone have any experience with sids drop axles?

I've got an axle from Sid's and its great !. Sid is a big help with any questions you have.
One thing you have to watch for is scrub line. That's the line between the bottom of your rims and the bottom of the axle. Imagine your rims with no tires mounted on the axle. You need clearance so that if both tires were to come off the rims while driving ( has that ever happened ? ) the axle wont drag on the pavement. On my '49 I went with a 3" drop and 15" wheels which gives me about 1/2" clearance.
You also have to have a new tie rod with new ends so you can mount it under the tie rod ends for spring clearance. Then get your caster right and it will drive great.
I can cruse at 70 + and the truck tracks straight and steers easy.
If you want really low and a new car ride go independent. If you want the trad look and a good ride go dropped axle from Sid's

Re: Has anyone have any experience with sids drop axles?

I was going to go with Sids but after the cost of shipping my axle down having the work done and shipping it back, it was cheaper to buy a CPP dropped axle through The Old Car Centre in Burnaby BC bud. Then I ordered the new style tie rod and ends, a beefier drag link and bent my steering arm to avoid the bump steer issue

Beauty of a GMC by the way
