12 bolt yoke
Hey there good people!
I want to change my 1310 yoke to a 1350 yoke on my 12 bolt. I need to have a drive shaft built and might as well upgrade to the bigger joints. I was looking at a Yukon kit with crush sleeve and bolt. Question is - would I have to check the pattern on my gears and all that jazz or can I just install this? It's a 3.73 posi unit. Thanks for your help!

I know alot of people that have gotten away with leaving the old crush sleeve and just changing the yoke and pinion seals..I'm pretty sure you know how the crush sleeve works when building a diff, but it sets the preload on the pinion bearings, that's checked with a in/lb dial torque wrench as you go..with the diff out of the housing
And it takes alot of torque on the pinion nut to crush it.. If just changing the seal,some people will mark the old nut and yoke and put it back in the same spot..but since youd be changing that it wont help.. If your going to do all that, I would go ahead and check the pattern before you start..take some pics of the pattern...the pull the chunk and pinion, replace the crush sleeve and torque the pinion nut to crush it. Or even better, swap it out to the crush sleeve eliminator kit..

Oh my. That sounds like a lot of work on the ground. I just read post where a fella had his diff drop on his face by accident. Not looking forward to that at all.

No reason to re check pattern, you're not changing shims so it wont move the gear set. Remove the axles, remove the carrier and keep track of what shims and caps are on what side, remove yoke, slide pinion out, install new crush sleeve, seal, and tighten up, it takes a lot of torque to get the sleeve to start crushing, but once it does go slow, check your rotational torque with a beam type inch pound torque wrench, and then reinstall your carrier and axles, measure for drive shaft, and enjoy.

Personally I would use a dial indicator and just measure it. Take a measurement of the top of the pinion to the top of the nut before removing the yoke. Set the new and old parts on a flat surface and measure the depths of the yoke, washer, and nut. Adjust the original measurement and tighten the new assembly down that far. This should keep everything the same and alot easier than pulling the chunk.

Thousands of yokes are removed and replaced daily.
The trick is to put the nut back in the same position which is easier than it seams. Just tighten the nut up to the point which it starts requiring more torque to tighten. That's the point at which you removed it.

I would pull axles and measure rotational torque on your current yoke.
Install new yoke and run crush sleeve or shim (I prefer shims) to achieve same torque number. If it were just a seal replacement reusing all the same parts Bigdav160 is spot on. |

I have repaired a truck 10 bolt po changed seal reused old nut no lock tight . I grabbed my Haynes/ Chilton manual for torque specs used a new nut red locktite checked inch lbs after over 5 years latter I still see it driving today
Point is do not over torque it it should be fine over torqing it is where you stand a chance at making the crush sleeve smaller changing your setup |

unless CRAZY power stick with the 1310 and leave it alone.
and if its lifted the 1350 has less working angle than the 1310 joint . i would skip crush sleeves my self anymore i do . i get the eliminator kit and set the shim pack up and be done . then if you need to change out a seal later or a yoke its stupid easy and done . but if you know a few tricks the old crush sleeve can be used .

Thanks guys! All of this is good info. I have a 6.0 LQ9 I am building for this project so I am not sure of the HP. It should be pretty stout though. The 5.7 in it should be about 340HP. I guess I could just get a real good 1310 and call it a day. I like to overkill things though. I have never snapped a U-joint but that would also be catastrophic should this thing hook up good. I opted for a Tom Woods driveshaft setup in my 4X4 and it could twist off 36" Swampers up the block without being worried about hooking up. Of course it has a 14 bolt FF locker.

Years ago I bought a Jeep that had a leaking pinion seal because the nut had backed off. I put in a new seal and nut which I tightened almost to the point of yield on the crush sleeve and never had another problem.
