Yea, but it is in Tenn and I am in Cal? Cross country trip? HaHa. Not much of a demand for these big boys judging from the price. This is nationwide bidding!
The small journal 327 practically garantees that this is a forged crank engine.
Nice original truck though. Also the thermostat housing bypass hoses make me laugh. The size of the hoses almost negate the thermostat completely!
I would love to own this truck though.

We also have another one of these, except with a 18 foot bed, with a 327, so does that have a forged crank? It looks identical to the one in the pic.

Generally in a truck application you would end up with a forged crank. The only way I know to tell for sure is to look at the parting line of the crank. If it is forged it will be pretty wide. If it is cast it will be very narrow. You really can't see this with the engine together. Either way it is a great engine. Maybe some one else knows a way to tell with out the engine being apart, however with it being as old as it is, who can guarantee everything is original? The only advantage to a large journal 327 is you can put a 350 crank in it, to make a ...350!

I have to agree with you but I know a few guys that think the 302 is the best motor that ever came out of Detroit.

I knew a fella that had a destroked 327 in a 71 Chevelle...I was NOT impressed with it.

Yea, a 302 is a great engine, but not for a truck. If you want torque a longer stroke engine is a better choice from an engine efficiency standpoint. Thats why a 350 is better than a 327 and why Chevrolet built it.

I believe the 327 large journal was built only in 1968, in 1969 the 350 was introduced.

From what I've seen the 350 was introduced in 69 with the 327 available through the end of the 69 model year. This would make the large journal 327 harder to find than the small journal I suppose.

PS this would also cover the fact that as Chevy was ramping up production of the 350 they still had the 327 to offer the buying public. Additionaly you have the folks who won't buy the first year of anything so Chevy offered the overlap of engines for a year.

350 was introduced in 67 for the camaro, and then it spread to the other lines in 68 and 69

Yeah, they are very cool, we have two currently, this one, and one w/ a 327, but the only good things on that one are the motor and the hydraulic ram for the box.

The beast has new shoes! We had to get new wheels since the wheels were split rims and we had to get new front tires. The wheels are 22.5-8.5(i think) steels, and the tires are 22.5-9, basically semi tires. This is on the front, when we get a flat on the rear we have to replace all of those wheels as well, until then we can keep them. Pics to come, really busy today.

Wow Bud, that is one clean old truck. I am especially fond of the old big trucks. Other than the International mirrors, it couldn't get anymore original. It's great to see these old trucks that have been used for their original purpose but still very well cared for. My 65 C80 fire truck only had 13,000 original miles, but it still doesn't look as good as yours. The cab is still very strait and solid, but it has lots of holes drilled in it for all of the fire truck lights and sirens, and the paint is getting very thin. The interior of mine is still nice except for the floor mat, and of course all the holes for the light switches.

The reason they said you would have to change the wheels is because those are the two piece wheels, not to be confused with lock-ring type wheels like mine has, which are still used alot today, and are fairly safe as long as the wheel and locking ring are not badly rusted or bent. The wheels on your truck actually come apart right down the middle of the wheel in two almost equal halves. They are extremely dangerous, even just to air up a low tire so be very careful. These are the wheels that coined the name "killer wheels" or "widow makers". They have injured or killed many people, which is why most states have outlawed them all together.

But again, you have a very nice old truck there. Congradulations and best of luck with it.
