Chev-odge: ‘71 K20 Cummins build

Welcome to the build of my Chev-odge. I’m Rob and I’ve always wanted a Cummins diesel truck and I wouldn’t want anything else except a 67-72 Chevy to house it in. I am thankful for this site and the resources it contains as I certainly will be needing them, and you. Thank you for your input and help ahead of time. Enjoy the fun and struggles with me that this will bring…and hopefully we’ll see a great outcome at the end.

So to start things off, here’s the 1989 5.9 Cummins I purchased with 400,000 miles. With this, I received the 5 speed Getrag transmission (no transfer case), the front and rear differentials (with 3.08 gears I am told, not verified), the driveshafts and to me, one of the most important items…the front clip of the Dodge. Right now my goal is to use the factory Dodge crossmember (with mod and fabrication) in the K20 frame. I think using the Mopar mounts will be slick. Has anyone else used a Mopar cross member? If so, what was your experience?

I’m calling in reinforcements. Jim and John (father and son), know what to do…they do this for a living.👍

Brought some parts home to clean up and prime…the pistons are home for good as they won’t be used. We’re going .020 over on the block.

Re: Chev-odge: ‘71 K20 Cummins build

Cool build!
Good choice to go through the Cummins now
I have a Chevy-Dodge too. Built it in 2003 using a rolled over 02 Dodge.
I used the entire drivetrain and chassis on mine- been using it for over 20 years.

Thank you, I’ve always wanted one…how difficult was it to put the Chevy on the Dodge chassis?

Re: Chev-odge: ‘71 K20 Cummins build

Back at it…I wanted to locate the position of the 350’s harmonic balancer vs the frame, which then I can use in locating the Cummins.

Re: Chev-odge: ‘71 K20 Cummins build

I also made a note of where GM locates the engine cross member and will measure the distance from the center of the mounts to the front of the balancer, and compare that to the Cummins mount location…I’ll attempt to use the Mopar crossmember and new mounts on the project.

Rob, sorry I missed your question. I had to cut the frame to achieve the 127” WB and then make body mounts. It took about 4 months to build.
You’re making good progress!

Nice! 4 months is not too bad at all…I hope to get things rolling nicely by then. Thank you!
