67 posi rear help

i've asked this same sort of question on here before, but know i'm wondering. if i get a 67 half ton posi rearend. will 78 5 lug axels (fine spline) work in this rearend. i will be putting it in my 64 that has coils of corse. pretty sure the 67 has coils too, does it not. any help would be much appreciated. i haven't had any luck finding a 71 or 72 rearend around here, so i hope this works. thanks in advance for any comments.

Nope

I am envious of the 67 posi rearend-what gear?-need one for my 67 but have not made the leap. From others/me in the forum, you can purchase 5 lug axles for the 67 --around $260 or so a pair--, change out or modify a housing for 71 up, or lathe down the axle centers for a 5 lug brake drum (71-72) and redrill the stud holes for 5x5. Like the pic below. These guys on the forum know a lot of stuff. 71-72 axles are about 3/4" too long.

thanks for the reply. i don't know what gears it has. i just know it has posi from the glove box door. it sitting in a junk (restoration) yard here. it's got no box, but a big ugly camper. i'm not 100% sure it is a 67, it could be 68. so what you are saying is that the 78 axels won't work in the 67-68 posi without mods, is this correct. i don't want to have to go thruough alot of headaches to maks this work. the rearend is only going to cost me $200 canadian. i don't want to spend $250+ on axels. i guess i still gotta look for the unicorn, 71-72 rearend. any other input is still welcome.

No, the 78 1/2 ton axles will not work in a 65-70 1/2 ton housing( I guess there were a few special 70's that were the same axle housing as a 71-72). If you have anyone coming to Dallas, I will sell you the 2 in the pic for $130. They will fit in a suitcase.

I do not know if a 78 can be machined/shortened to fit a 65-70. Have never heard anyone talking about it -- doubt it ---may be a different spline as the 65-70 which are 30 spline 30.5 inches long.

I put a 65 posi rearend in my 69. Coil on the 65, coil on the 69, what I found was the 65 diff was about 1"-2" narrower on the 65 diff on each side. worked out good for me because I have custom made 12" wide rally rims( to fit my 50s), with a lot of offset to the outside. If I kept the 69 diff the tires would stick out past the side of the box, this way they are flush Gives it a nice look too.

I'm interested in the axle shafts if they fit the 65-68 rear.

Plus i'm already in D/FW.

Justin is close----- shoot me a PM for my phone number - I would like your axles you take out. We have to negotiate your price. This Saturday is good before 3 pm. Or Sunday.
