Project Bleed isn't just for trucks.

I'll keep this simple.

Sink and countertops all 10 years old.

Disposal locked up and I guess there was enough goo crap in there it was causing the dishwasher to back up into the sink and even overflow around the door.

Awesome.

And the sink had started falling. Double Awesome.

I go to buy a new disposal, clamps to hold the sink up while it dries, and since the sink barely fits in the cabinet, instead of using glue in clamps with nuts (which had ALL fallen off already) I bought some white shelving to use to hold up each side. I did this all the night before the project was to start, thinking I had everything and this was going to save time...

Got everything torn apart. Silicone was a complete PIA to remove. It didn't want to come off of the granite.

started looking at the faucet, looks like crap. It had started pitting, etc. and it's near impossible to remove with the sink in place. Might as well replace it now...

Got to 3 different stores. No one sells a "4 piece" set anymore. The best I could find was one that has a cover to cover two of the holes. Great. Another $200. One positive there is the one I bought uses a big metal c clamp underneath so it now also functions to help hold up the center of the sink.

Almost two days of pissing around, at least 3 different trips to buy stuff, and over $400 later we have a functioning sink and dishwasher again.

This happens on every project I do

Now you need a reverse osmosis system plummed in with a large tank and you’ll REALLY have a mess under the sink

Re: Project Bleed isn't just for trucks.

This was plenty for now.

I redid our laundry room to include a new tile floor, cabinets, and a new washer/dryer. Our downstairs half bath was partially redone (new tile floor and toilet). And we replaced the upstairs heat pump AND attic blower unit.

All in the last 3 months. I did everything but the A/C stuff, me and my wallet are done

Happens to me too often. My story adds the scratched up hands/arms and things I broke either on accident or on purpose.

I have done my share of plumbing in all my remodeling days of houses .Apartments and sheds ,barns ,,what ever.. and I still say plumbing can give any person the most upsetting problems of any other thing there is within any of these buildings I just mentioned.. Glad you got it fixed 67 Chevy .

Re: Project Bleed isn't just for trucks.

I cringe just looking at plumbing. Especially under the sink. There is no comfortable way to work under a sink. But I guess that I don't have to tell you that.

Small jobs become big ones fast. My ex wife would complain that I would take too long on something that I had to fix. She was always complaining about something.

I would tell her that I wasn't good at that kind of work. But I was very good at digging holes and coming up with alibi's.

Re: Project Bleed isn't just for trucks.

Last big home fix up for us was a very old house that had basement, main, and a large attic with a couple of rooms and a half started bath.

I took that house down to the studs. Ripped out all the old galvanized pipe and all the knob and tube wiring and put in all new stuff. It about killed my brain lol. I never wanted to do that again. It actually made me hate doing anything upkeep wise because I knew once I finished/fixed one thing something else would need to be done ... Saved us a ton of money though.

Moved to this house maybe 17-ish years ago. Honey can we take this out, move the wood stove, move the water heater to the garage, move the washer and dryer to this area and these counter tops have to go. Did all of that hated every minute of it and it bit me in the ass a thousand times getting it done right.

Now we are getting older and want to stay here till we croak. Been making it old person ready haha. I havent done any of it. She just had granite counter tops put in and a ginormous sink put in. She told me they also offer plumbing service so she was going to have them replumb everything under the sink ... Hey I can do that no problem! She just looked at me. Sooo I watched the plumber take care of things. It was nice =)

It is nice isn't it. If my wife wants me to fix something I just pick up the phone.

I'm not doing it. That ship has sailed. The game's in the refrigerator, the door's closed, the light's out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard and the Jell-O's jiggling. It's over baby.

Re: Project Bleed isn't just for trucks.

Well, duh ... I must still be in the last millennium because I've never seen a sink under the counter top like that.

All of ours have a flange that sit on top of the counter. In fact, the two bathroom sinks I don't even bother to clamp down. I literally unscrew the flex lines at the cut off valves and take apart the trap, and lift the whole dang thing out to change the faucet

Re: Project Bleed isn't just for trucks.

I was just happy there wasn't any leaks.

Glad I'm not the only one.

My bathroom/laundry room updates ended up costing almost 4K. Washer/dryer, cabinets, countertop, new toilet, floor levelor, backer board, everything to do tile, bunch of trim, some paint, and everything else has gone flipping nuts.

I'd love to pay someone, but I'm still at that point where I'm not ready to give up what I can control yet. You have no idea how hard it was letting someone walk around in my attic tearing stuff out for the air handler. Worth every damn penny. Apparently our original air handler was set up wrong and used the wrong ducting... it's soooooooooo much better now, you can feel the air coming out of the vents AND this new system hardly runs compared to the old one running all the time. It's hard finding people to trust. I luckily have a friend that does real estate and has a bunch of rentals. He has "people" he's used for 10+ years. I just cheat and use his people

Re: Project Bleed isn't just for trucks.

Every project I get into seems to open a new cans of worms. But I still enjoy the sense of accomplishment and will take that over pointing to the work and pulling the money out. I can't imagine the thousands of dollars I have saved by doing all I've done on the house myself. Look at what the improvements did for increasing the value on top of that, but it's not about any of that (till I go to sell). Not just the sense of accomplishment, either. It was my idea I executed and it represents me. I don't like being dependent on others, so saying I did it all is a big deal to me.

But I hate doing kitchen sinks!! Always have, always will!!!

My young neighbor came over a few days ago and we ripped out the rest of the old redwood decking in the old hot tub room. And of course a lot of talking about how to proceed since absolutely nothing about this job has any correlation to normal or accepted construction methods. So we decided that he's coming back Monday with his haz-mat gear to pull out the insulation under the adjoining room, that the pack rats had pulled down and chewed to heck. This is about the only chance to deal with it because right now there is approximately a 16' long by 2' high gap under the wall between the two rooms.

But after that I'm probably going to finish most of the job myself since he is just not available that much. I built houses and log cabins 30 to 40 years ago but it's a lot more difficult for me to do anything now. I suppose if I can get one or two floor joists installed in a day that I will be doing okay. I hope to have him back in a month or so to help me lay the plywood.

Scope creep is part of my daily life it seems. I tell everyone about to start a home project to not do the first thing until you have about 1.5x the money you think it's going to cost. You will decide to do something a bit different/better, more of it, or have an "oh, crap" moment when you find something you have to fix while you are at it.

Just life. Gotta enjoy it because it's too short.

Project, move building. Simple enough, so let's begin. I think I need a temporary pavilion to put contents of building under during the prep and move. I'll just staple plastic up for side walls. It's temporary but it needs soffit and fascia to look better. Done. Might as well close in the exposed gable, tongue & groove beaded board will look good. Done. Only another 6' to reach the building it's built in front of. Might as well extend that. Done. There are already the few ceiling joists tying the side beams together. I can buy a few more 2 x 8s and some plywood to gain a loft for more storage. Done. Rain dripping and splashing off the roof. Gutter/Done. I think I'll keep this building in place with no sides for a covered work area. The grade is awkward on the high side. I need to form and pour a concrete curb to make the transition. Done. Before pouring that it was a good thing I thought to lay conduit for running power to the building it never had. Done.

This weekend I hope to be digging and laying in the conduit to the garage I built last year, then into the house cellar. I can't wait to get that power run. All these years I've been running a cord from the house to the barn
