Question Door Hinge Bolts/Anchor Nuts

Trying to adjust my d/s door on my 71 Cheyenne Super and discovered that 2 out of the upper 3 door bolt anchor nuts are stripped in the door. Anyone have advise on how to repair/replace?

Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Randy

Re: Door Hinge Bolts/Anchor Nuts

randy.powell; I had this happen on the truck I'm working on. only mine was so bad that I had to completely cut the hinge out from the door and replace it with one that I scrounged from a wrecking yard by welding it back in with a mig welder. what a PTA that was because I had to weld the hinge in and then when I was done I had to weld the cut out piece of door skin back in place. Fortunately my truck was in the restoration stage still. I don't know if yours is in the drivable stage or not but one of the things you could do is take the door panel off Put the bolts back in And a line it properly, open the door all the way and support it with a floor jack And then reach inside the door panel with Individual nuts for each bolt and screw them on tight. good luck and let us know how that works.

Re: Door Hinge Bolts/Anchor Nuts

I used a heli-coil to fix one of mine. I just drilled out the captive nut with the special drill bit...tapped it for the new heli-coil and installed the heli-coil.

Re: Door Hinge Bolts/Anchor Nuts

Why not just take the door off and drill and tap to the next size bigger bolt? That is if you are talking about the door? I have been cutting up doors for my crew cab project and the inside nuts you speak of are actually an L bracket shaped pieces with threads similar to a nut. Trevor

Re: Door Hinge Bolts/Anchor Nuts

So are the captive (cage) nuts replaceable? It feels like they "float" in the door. Or are they a part of the "L" bracket and the whole assembly has to be replaced? I'm trying to avoid having to remore/cut the door as she is a driver. Paint is good so I don't want to come in via the outside door skin.

Not enough room to drill and tap for helicoils with the door attached. I'm a "one man" army with a bad back so it's too much for me to try and manage door removal by myself. Sucks getting old!

I appreciate all the input, ideas, and pics! You guys (gals) on this board are the BEST!

Best Regards,
Randy
