Kick panel vent gasket

I bought a set of gaskets online and I'm not really happy with them. The material is kind of cheap and I cant get them to fit real good. I'm thinking about grinding off the rivits that hold the 2 plates together and installing a solid piece of rubber then bolt it back together. Possible use a piece on inner tube. Anyone done something like this?

i used truck tire innertubes and just traced out from the plates --didnt drill out rivits
i just carefully pryed open the plates and fit the rubber in --wd -49 helps --then i carfuully hammered the plates closed .
truck inner tubes are in my opinion thicker and i find much better ,
hope this helps

I'm with Daze57, I'd hit my buddy at the tire store for a Truck tube that they can't repair that has enough square inches of decent rubber left to make a gasket or three.
