will a stroke fit in a 72

if you ever wondered if a powerstroke will fit in a 72 truck, it does. it is tight and i still have more work ahead of me and alot of cleaning on the motor, but it does fit and i did sit the cab down over and there are clearence issues with the transmission touching the firewall. and the turbo touches the firewall. so i lifted the cab up 3 inches and it all clears. so you could cut into the firewall, but if its a lifted truck you could do a body lift. im going to add a 2x3 box tube across the top of the frame and raise all body mounts up to match. and adding the box tube and a nice new crossmember under the motor and i think it should have plenty of stregnth. but i first need to finish my 2wd shorty, got my new 468 going in soon. so i need to get my frame blasted and reassembled first.

Well, that is truly a different project you have there.

Some will say you have comitted the "ultimate sin" of a ford motor in a chevy truck; of course if that is a 7.3 it's really an international motor as opposed to a true ford engine.

Good luck and post pics of the other project also.

Re: will a stroke fit in a 72

so then WHEN you need to replace the injectors you will have to remove the cab? or are you gonna have access holes in the firewall to get to the oil galley plugs?

now for some rib-jabbing fun. I think those powerstrokes are a very efficient engine. they do a great job of converting diesel fuel into smoke and noise. LOL

theres more space with the 72 cab than the ford cab after my 3" custom body lift, and when this crazy beast is done, we can chain our trucks together and see wich direction they go.

Re: will a stroke fit in a 72

My argument that always shut up the local diesel guys...
let me put a turbo on my 500 like you guys have... and then we'll have a little tug-o-war.
I just did a little MPG test on our power-joke at work and was rather disapointed.
96(ish) F-250 4X4 (7000 pounds) with a flat bed that has a tall front wall. I did a 100 mile of straight freeway at 60 - 75 MPH, minimalhills, and another 80 miles of 75% freeway. Yes, I do launch it like a top fuler, but like I said, this was very much mostly freeway. This sucker only got 12 MPG. it has new injectors as of 4000 miles ago, and a new cam sensor as of 10,000 miles ago, and has 160k showing on it.
I was rather shocked to see such crappy MPG.

Re: will a stroke fit in a 72

I have bad thoughts of building a 72 Tahoe 4dr and setting it over my 99 PS running gear and frame! Now that I know it will fit

For the post above~ Mine has 156k and I get 18-21mpg and I am not easy on it, I love the turbo spool sound!

if it makes you feel any better, i have a 468 bb i just got done going in my 67 short 2wd. and with a deisel i can spend alot less to gain alot more than it costs me on gass. and i can push a button on a controller and put it back to stock. do that on gas and have it last 400,000 miles. and might want to have that stroke looked at that you where driving.

Re: will a stroke fit in a 72

The older 7.3 got ok mileage...........The worst though(Atleast the majority opinion held my many, me included in my area) is the Duramax. Key to good fuel mileage is not running them like a gasser, you don't need to stand on it at leaving from a stop, and a stick is a must for economy with a diesel............Around here in the mountains it kills the mpg quick, the auto that is, they always want to downshift and put the rpm's through the roof, with a diesel that is not needed(Well, maybe except on some of GM's earlier experiments) Open exhaust really helps, along with a pyro which tells you whether your working it or not, you obviously don't want to work it, because that is fuel

That engine actually fit better than I thought it would.............I'll have to keep that in mind next time I might have to do a swap............A 7.3 PS with a ZF-6spd would be an ok setup I don't know if my friends could handle me driving something like that though............I have to have a inline hammering away under my hood

For anyone who cares.............Alot of guys on the net tell me a cam position sensor from a electronic IH-DT466 cures them of needing it replaced from what seems to be all the time, and its cheaper from an IH dealer than Ferd.

Re: will a stroke fit in a 72

I have a 2000 7.3 PSD that gets from 18 to 22 unloaded and about 16 loaded.
Truck has been 100% trouble free for 6 years now. I have pulled every thing from a 6000 lbs camper to 6000 lbs of quarter horse mares and the PSD always keeps cranking out decent mileage and trouble free service.

Re: will a stroke fit in a 72

Just sold mine and had a programmer, exhaust and intake with small lift and 35's 4wd. Never got more than 13mpg loaded or unloaded but would pull like you wouldnt believe. Miss that truck dearly, bought it new. The girlfriend works for Enterprise Leasing so she can drive one whenever we want so....... Goodbye truck.

Guess you will need a front axle also to move the diff over and something more beefy than the dana 44.

well the truck i bought is a f350 with a dana 60 and im using all the motor , trans, and transfercase. may even use the fuel tanks, i took them out just in case. so everything should line up pretty good.

and i made more progress today not really on the 72, but the clean up of the remains of the stroke. after i clean up the motor with a pressure washer im going to cover it all up, and store it for the winter. and through the winter i will finish my frame off on my 67 2wd shortbed. and finish up the stroke around the end of summer. but atleast i got a nice jump on my stroke project.

got the whole frame and supension cut into three peices and stuffed into the bed of my s10.

and the cab and bed on a little trailer, luckily i dont have far to go.

Re: will a stroke fit in a 72

Well Hey Guys, I am biased I am a cummins fan. I get great mileage. last I checked it was right at 19 MPG. And that is not light footing it either. I too like the sound of a Turbo spooloing up. And I also have straight exhaust. OH YEAH!!!
