496 engine combo????

Ok I now am starting to buy everything I will need to start my engine build. I was going with a 496 scat crank, H-beam rods, and dome forged pistons. I have Merlin World Grumpy Jenkins 119CC iron 320 runner rec port heads with 2.30-1.88 valves. The piston catalog states I should have 10.2 CR. I have an Weiand Team G dual plane rec port intake. This motor will only be for street.. Want good power and lots of thump...I am looking at the Lunati Voodoo #60213 Hyd roller. 241/249 625lift on 110. I am also trying to research which carb would be best...I was looking at the 850 Mighty demon Annular Mechanical Secondaries. Does this combo seem like it will work good. Anyone have anything to add or take away. Thanks, Ronnie

Re: 496 engine combo????

What is your TQ converter and rear gear? IMO, a BBC does not need a duel plane intake. You missing 30-40 Ft LBS at 2500-3500 isnt noticeable when when you can not hook up anyways. And if your TQ converter is above that, then it really is useless. From the cam card, a single plane is more along the lines but if you already have one use it. I went with a Single plane. If fits where the power is and i can not get traction half the time anyways. The cam duration looks to be pretty good for your heads.

Re: 496 engine combo????

I am using a Turbo 400. Have not settled on a torque converter yet. I was looking at a 2800 stall.. From what I hear is that with the big block power the real stall should be around 3000 with this converter. Any recommendations?? My truck has a 9" with 4.11 gears. The rear tires are 31X18.5X15.. I need to get a new photo.. I have since put a Mustang II under the front, hung the doors, and cab is ready for paint...

Re: 496 engine combo????

with a 496 . you can afford to loose some bottom end ..more so in a truck.. are u gonna tow with this?? if no.. a 496 dual plane will be a tire fryer..
why you use'n a dual plane intake..
with the dual plane you're better ff with a 750 carb as the engine will run out of rpm before the carb will..

Re: 496 engine combo????

I got such a good deal on the intake from a friend I could not pass it up. I also got a very good deal on the heads and they both were rec port. I had also heard that dual plane was better for street use. So would the 750 be easier tune. according to the barry grant website it suggest the mighty demon. Is this the best choice? My dad suggested the 800 Edelbrock?

Re: 496 engine combo????

You would be best to leave the edelbrock and the pos demon on the shelf and just go with a holley ultra series, proform or quickfuel. The street avenger would also be a good choice if your looking for vacuum secondaries. If mechanical the ultra series are probably the better choice.

Re: 496 engine combo????

So what is the real difference with the vacuum vs mechanical secondaries. What would be the difference in the way the truck run.

Re: 496 engine combo????

vacuum secondaries are typically used in heavy vehicles pulling street duty. Mechanical secondaries are more about performance. Dont take that as me saying vacuum secondaries wont perform because they definately can. Its just a matter of the application and complete combo.Theres a lot of good reading on the web that explains the difference a lot more in depth. Others will chime in and add some extra info. IM just not up for writing a book

Re: 496 engine combo????

vac 2nd only use the air the engine needs,
the mechanical, you deside with your foot..
mechanical are gas hogs on the street..
both can work great.. you can get lost in tuning them..
it's all in what your want most out of the truck..
peak hp and wot all the time mechanical..
street more than track, a vac sen will work better as it works off engine load, and needs..
short stroke engine really like the mechanical as they rev as fast as you can stop your foot..
a 496 is lazy in compared to a 327 or a 427..
but if your gonna be hotdog'n it all the time the mechanical might be a better choice..
most go mechanical, because they can't tune a vac 2nd. carb.
either way a 750 mechanical is more than enough unless your gonna be seinging the neddle to 7500rpm all the time..
vac sec. you can get a 800-850 as the engine load opens the sec. and only uses what it needs, the mechanical you stop your foot and all 4 barrels open if the engine needs it or not.. you can cover some of this up with dog led boosters/etc..
if you are more street and more time at under 4500rpm. you don't need a mechanical d/p
if your more into racing the d/p is the way to go for most..

Sweet looking project it should be allot of fun. My little brother has a 59 with a similar suspension setup but his is a mild small block truck.

Re: 496 engine combo????

What does anyone have to say anbout the Edelbrock thunder series 800 CFM. Being a street only truck would this even be a choice for my setup? Thanks to everyone for their help. Just trying to make sure I get a good powered reliable motor the first time out.

Re: 496 engine combo????

They are easy carbs to work with and tune. Never heard of one being used as a power maker though. Just reliable street carbs.

Re: 496 engine combo????

I don't see a problem with the dual plane. Use a spacer if ya got to. The cam should be fine. It might want a little more converter though. I would go with a holley carb If it was me. Just my .02

Re: 496 engine combo????

Unless your looking to leave power on the table put a holley on that thing. A 770 street avenger would be an excellent choice and will likely run great out of the box.

Re: 496 engine combo????

Ok cool, I know someone who has a retro Howard Cam and lifters for sale for cheap... 236/242 @50 degrees, 620 lift, on 112 center. Didn’t look too much different then my Lunati I was looking at. Are Howards cams any good? Will it be much different in power and sound....I have heard the Lunati and want to keep the same type idle....I had someone tell me I would not be able to tell the difference in those two cams by the sound. He sadi they would sound the same... True????

Re: 496 engine combo????

I wouldn't buy a cam for the name on the box. I ran a Chet Herbert roller for years and it ran really well. If the howards specs out good for the combination I would run it.

Re: 496 engine combo????

Yea, I was just not sure if anyone have had any problems with the Howards cams. Also inquiring if the cam would be good with my combo with power and sound, or would the Lunati be a better choice. Not sure what the difference in Lobe centers would do?.. The rest of the cam was not much different but I could be wrong.... Thanks for all the input. Ronnie

Re: 496 engine combo????

Picking a cam is based on numerous things I.e. Compression converter gears heads vehicle weight etc. the howards may be fine for it though depending on what you want out of it. Like Kevin said the names don't necessarily mean one is Better than the other. Ice had good luck with lunati and only ran one howards cam but it was fine also.
