Timing
My baby has been setting for months now because I could not get it started. Its been acting like the timming has been 180 out. I've been trying to get it set (along with several other people). I finally took it in to my mechanic (he is an old school mech.) and sure enough it was 180 out. But its back firing and is checking out why (like and exahust valve isn't working right). This thing sure has a mean learing curve

If your sure you've found TDC on the #1 cylinder, and gotten your distributor dropped in with the rotor on the #1 firing position, you should be able to start the truck, give the dizzy some advance and away it should go. If not, I would pull the valve covers and check the valve adjustments. If those check out, you might have a sticking valve.

I would first make sure all the plug wires are in the right spot 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2

I'm gonna guess timing chain.Especially if you didn't pull the dist between when it ran and when it wouldn't start.The teeth sometimes sheer off and allow the valvetrain timing to be out.

back firing after sitting for long time sometimes just carb gets dirty to or a rubber plug or vacuum leak , i had engine back fire and sputter after sitting then i checked water in radiator and it went ll in the engine ,,lol

I have changed the timing chain and sprockets, the hei distributor is new. I am hoping that since ith has been setting for months that the back firing will settle down. Since i just got home i will mess with it this weekend.I figured that the wise people on this board would lead me in a good direction.
