Arizona is awesome

Just got back from a week there at the in-laws. Near Phoenix.
Seems that we had much going against us. My wife seemed to develop a sun allergy, I had some weird eye allergy before we left for there, the neighbors started replacing the spinkler system @6 AM. My upper back started spasming. It all was such nice weather we just forgot about the little stuff and enjoyed the stay.
Coming from the Seattle area the blue sky and the low of 60something was a delight. My wife and son and I hiked @ the White tank mountains. We went to the Phoenix auto show, swam in the pool, saw the Botanical gardens hiked some rock formations near ther while my wife looked for coffee.
Thinking about visiting @ summer to see if we can stand the real heat?

I've been in that very spot! My brother lived in Youngtown. And the sheetmetal is awesome! I bought a rust free AC 72 cab for only 200 bucks...

NonHog,we were at Laughlin for the River Run in the spring,my wife sneezed from Flagstaff to Laughlin I think it was the pine or the mesquite. It's hard to compare our green yards to the landscaped with rock yards besides like you I still like our seasons.

I smoked a lot of dope in the White Tanks when I was a GI stationed at Luke AFB. Good memories! Did you go up to the waterfall?

Always loved the AZ desert. Summer days are awful, but not too many other places can you drink a beer in the pool at 3:00AM.

We noticed something down there stuffing us up but it wasn't too bad.
Seemed odd. I got my fill of green in the last hour cleaning gutters.

That picture of my boy on the hill is just to the left of the waterfall. (dry)

Not sure I could stand the heat but I'm going to try it. Oddly enough the older I get the more I tolerate it. 115 is the highest I've seen in SW Washington on the bike it felt like a hair dryer was in my face.

So does my roof. Just in the attic getting Christmas decorations, found standing water in my cooler. I think its just from the heavy moss on a crappy roofing job.

it all matters to what part of phoenix you stay in. I live in central phoenix in the historic district and its all shade trees and green yards for miles and miles!

Re: Arizona is awesome

I didn't get near that area, I wondered what the water bills were on the yards with grass? I love the SW U.S. I think I could put up with the heat in the summer for the heat in the winter
My wife wants to be a traveling Nurse after the dust settles with her parents estate. She likes Arizona,New Mexico and Texas but wants to go back to Iowa in summer.

Saw some green trees but not many green yards. Did not go in Central Phoenix, got pics? My roof was greener than most areas I saw in the area.
Not saying I saw it all. Wish I did. Really like what I've seen so far.

Its better now! kicked off moss and needles, treated. should be good for another month.

Re: Arizona is awesome

a buddy of mine and his fiancee (retired) bought a "home" in some trailer type area for a winter place. they spent like $6000 and lot rent is $4000/yr which includes all the activities they could want. last weekend I called him while I was out in freezing drizzle and he said it was 74* with a slight breeze and not a cloud in sight.

Re: Arizona is awesome

I like Tucson a little more than Phoenix - they get the summer monsoons there, thunderstorms every day in July and August. I don't think I could handle the heat there though. We never get more than 5 or 6 days a year above 80 here.

I like the green and season changes in other parts of the country too. But, we never have to shovel sunshine!

Hey wow. That was cool to read through this thread (I did notice it was 10 years old) to see you did end up moving to AZ. So I guess you went back in the summer? Good to see you post. No more roof moss, ey? Tell Don I said hi and I miss his humor

Re: Arizona is awesome

I'll be the contrarian. Nice place to visit but I would never live there again.

It's so dry it makes my skin crawl. In the summer with the dry heat and wind it feels like a convection oven. An my swimming stayed cold due to the outrageous water evaporation.

Don't get me started on the pack rat problem.

We went from 60 degrees in Puyallup (Tacoma) to 110. We moved in June! The heat is an issue but it feels great to my arthritic bones. I'm currently not on meds for Psoriatic Arthritis and feel the dry weather is a big factor. We moved in 2020 which was one of the hottest summers on record. Oddly I miss mowing but not cleaning roof and gutters! I will say hello to Don.

I get it. Its not for everyone and yes I have pack rats! Have to move the shed and cement a floor. Because of my health it's a perfect place. Actually we might have picked NM because its a bit cooler but the job market is softer and crime is higher. I'm on disability but the Mrs. still works. So with no connections to Tucson we pulled the trigger. Less than a year later our best friends moved 8 miles away.

Yup ate dinner on a patio last night, in November. I had no idea that my health would improve as much as it did by being here. I wouldn't have sold most of my tools. Ah well!

I'll pass the message to Don. We email each other frequently.

This year we did, but for the last 6-7 years, it's been pretty weak.
