eBay Quadrajet Carbs?

Hello. I have a Q-Jet on my 454 that came off some unknown mystery motor and has seen better days.

I can rebuilt it, but if I stick with a Q-Jet I'd prefer to have one for that year engine. For a daily driver, would you suggest buying a proper core on eBay that came from a 74-454 and rebuilt it, or find a Holley Spread Bore to use?

Re: eBay Quadrajet Carbs?

Litterly there is no difference between 90% of quadrajets that is permanent.

I have grabbed 500 Cadillac quadrajets, and had them built for hotter 350's. If you have some jets, rods, and hangers. It's doesn't matter.

So I would go for a latter model with electric choke, and modify to make ideal for a 454.

I believe I have a electric choke core laying around, but I also have a 800 cfm version too.

Re: eBay Quadrajet Carbs?

I recommend looking for a 1980's motorhome/truck 454 carb and rebuilding to match your engine. The number is 17085212, they are 800 CFM electric choke and they are calibrated for trucks. One of the several I have came off my 1986 K30 with a 454 and were common motorhomes until 1989.

Re: eBay Quadrajet Carbs?

Most the Qjets on ebay are corroded junk. Get one that looks oily , dont get one that has any rust or corrosion on it. And dont pay too much

I bought a nice 1980ish 800CFM Qjet for cheap on ebay last year as a spare

My '81 k20 truck original carb is a 800cfm

Get parts and rebuilt kit from Cliff.

https://cliffshighperformance.com/

Get his book too

Thanks. I found a fairly clean one on EB cheap. No rust and everything appears intact and seems to work. It just arrived so I haven't had time to dig deep but it will get a good overhaul. I appreciate the link! It's looks way better than the references I have now.

Re: eBay Quadrajet Carbs?

I would check the air horn and main body to see if they're warped. If you think the tolerances are too out of whack toss it and find another. You will be forever dickering with erratic behavior.

I have one I o-hauled & detailed several years ago as a spare but never have used it. It is 17083224. I can't find a chart to see what it came off of. I will sell it reasonable as I don't do much work anymore.

Re: eBay Quadrajet Carbs?

I would stay clear of ebay unless you are very knowledgeable on Qjets. I have seen lots of Frankencarbs there. The ones with a Pontiac top, Oldsmobile center section, and a Chevrolet base plate. The different GM brands had different ideas on how to obtain good idle quality and when you mix and match the parts you might end up with a carburetor that will not idle correctly.

For the same reason stay clear of carburetors with corrosion visible. Corrosion in idle passages will ruin the carefully machined orifices and idle quality degrades. The more corrosion the more degraded. The carburetor shown in the link is only good for a few parts. At best it's a $5 core.

George, thank you!
I had already purchased one from eBay before I saw your post. If for some reason it turns out bad I'll PM you and see if we can make a deal.

I am not very swift on Q-jets but the one I got actually looks good, and it's all the same color - if that means anything. It doesn't look cobbled together and the seller said it worked when he pulled it from his K5 Blazer. It's one of the cleanest looking used carbs I've seen.

I know eBay is a crap shoot, like trying to buy quality jewelry from a street vendor, but it appears clean with no corrosion that I can see, and everything is intact including the electric choke.

I'm going to get the book mentioned in the link above but at the moment my truck is missing a radiator. Mine started leaking like a shower head and I found an old school radiator shop that is going to check it out. I already dropped it off but the guy isn't very optimistic about it. In addition to 7 or so big leaks it's got corrosion where the tubes meet the tank. He said they are high pressure leaks and every tube has them. I'm 99% sure I'll end up getting another one.

Do you have the carb number.
I have a book with some specs.
Your carb might be in the list.

Re: eBay Quadrajet Carbs?

I would be tempted to spray it out with some carb cleaner, bolt it on and see if it runs. It does look to be in good shape.

Apologies for the delayed response. Been dealing with plumbing when not at work.

I checked the carb and I don't know if I got hosed or not because I didn't find the number where it usually is. What I found was a REMAN sticker!

UREMCO 3-3798
https://www.uremcoinc.com/shop/carbu...art-no-3-3798/
11.06.2019 (reman date?)
22331

The seller said it worked fine when pulled, but lots of parts are sold as working when pulled and end up in the scrap pile. Seller also said he pulled it from his 454. Maybe so but the part number says it's for a SBC

It's all there and looks good, Glad I don't have much money in it.
