Re: What Makes Your Truck Unique?

I've been kind of avoiding this thread, because there's so much, but I'll try to summarize:

* Original owner; I ordered this truck and followed it down the assembly line as it was built. Drove it off the end of the line to the shipping building; left the plant at 1 am and by 5 pm that same day it was sitting at the dealership.

* I owned this truck for four years and then sold it to my father in law. When he passed in 2008 the family asked if I wanted it back so I got it and freshened it back up a bit. So I'm the first and third owner -

* MY6 4 speed manual; floor shift. It's a MOPAR A833 trans, with 3rd gear as 1:1 and 4th gear as overdrive.

Factory Hurst shifter....

Funny story about that:

This was about the time when Mr Gasket was buying out Hurst and, because GM was not sure they could get the shifters, they placed this transmission combination on "Stop Order". I received word that my truck would not be built and so I started fretting about what I might be able to do for "Plan B" (...order the three on the tree Saginaw trans and then replace it with my own Saginaw four speed with a floor shift, etc).

During this time I was walking through the plant, past the motor line, and I noticed a bunch of these transmissions on pallets: stacked up, dozens and dozens of them. I called the Material Control supervisor over and asked him "...how many of those transmissions do you think you have?".

"Probably a hunnert" he said.

"Don't you think we oughta' build 'em, rather than leaving them sit there?" I suggested

He thought that was a pretty good idea, so when I got back to the office I mentioned it to my boss.

We ended up building one hundred of those trucks under a temporary deviation (one of which, naturally, was mine).

* I lowered it when it had about 1500 miles on it; hidden hitch with a bed mounted spare -

That's all I have time for right now; full story is linked in my signature if anyone wants to read more.

K

My factory (from the 90s) color scheme? At least I have never seen it on another 73-87 truck. If not, it's a rust free 35 year old truck registered in MN. Not too many of em on the roads there

My father ordered the truck with 4.11 for towing and installed the Hone Overdrive shortly after for commuting.

Re: What Makes Your Truck Unique?

I let an after market performance parts company use my truck for engineering. In return they made me a one off cold air intake system & a set of aluminum valve covers that color match the filter partitions.

Mine's an 87 with the 6.2 diesel with air tilt cruise pw pl sliding rear window full gauge package clock gov-lock rear 2 tone paint. She was a top of the line when built, now she's a rallting leaking oil buring Rustoleum driver.
And next is my 77 - ex- road commision truck with 0 options including L6, 3OTT manual steering and manual disc brakes (couldn't get drums then).

my 102" cb whip, which is the size the cb radio needs, and the fact that nobody else in my neighborhood would be seen dead with a truck as old as mine

Re: What Makes Your Truck Unique?

What makes my truck unique? Well let's see here. It's a cobbled together death trap

1977 frame, '78 cab, unknown year for tranny/tcase/axles. Bed is off an '83. Hood is from a 74, has one repop fender, and one original GM fender (unsure of year).

Re: What Makes Your Truck Unique?

well my dad bought this truck brand new in 77 and it is 95% orginal the truck had 218k on the clock and it has the orignal engine, clutch, transmission, and rear end, it also has all the factory ball joints and tie rod ends with only minor wear. i drive this truck every were and never worry about mecanical difficultys. this is just proof that service work is the key to longevity...

Re: What Makes Your Truck Unique?

I got rid of my truck but Im still going to play.

I had the only bagged and bodied truck with both the fuel tanks still in place and functional. which means, my gas doors still had a purpose.

Re: What Makes Your Truck Unique?

My dad purchased this truck in the early 70's and it's only one of 2697 GMC short box trucks including step sides (documented) built in Canada in 1959.

In addition to that, only in Canada in 1959 did GMC offer the bed side stainless (documented).

I'd say it's very rare! I've never seen another '59 GMC Wideside Short box with the bedside stainless... ever in the past 43 years.

He's passed it along to me now and is helping out a bunch with the rebuild to it's original Omaha Orange and Bombay Ivory two tone.

Re: What Makes Your Truck Unique?

I don't see many with utility beds, especially in any color other than white. I think it was probably installed when new, which would explain why they went with the Camper Special package (although I'm not sure how different a C20 CS is than a C30 SRW). Of course, whoever installed it decided to weld it to the frame...

The seat I have is from a Suburban (I think), so it doesn't tilt. Don't think I've seen that in a pickup before, and it sure makes getting the motorcycle ramp in/out of there fun.
