Re: Hubcaps

Some GM pics from 1961 from the GM photo shop that show the 63 and earlier style GM built 4x4 hubcaps. These are two different suburbans. These are the same hubcaps that are on my 63 except I do not have a 4wd truck with the hubcaps that fit the front 4wd hubs, and mine are the chromed version.

Absolutely! For the original equipment enthusiast, input from knowledgeable members on these kinds of details is well worth the price of a membership here (even though in most cases it's not required). Kudos to those guys (and you know who you are) that give a hoot and contribute stuff from their archives for the benefit of people they don't even know.

Re: Hubcaps

I agree that factory 4wd probably didn't come from the factory with hubcaps. But the 61/62 4wd caps are correct for the 63, so they were produced for 4wd trucks. The couple of sets of 61-63 4wd hubcaps that I have seen were not standard caps with holes cut in them. The 61-63 caps have a raised bowtie in the center and would leave parts of the bowtie on the cap if a hole was cut out of the center or you would have a huge gap around the hub. I have seen several sets and they all look the same with a raised rim where the front hub sticks out through the cap. They may not have been made in 63, but the 61/62 4wd caps are period correct caps for the 63.

Re: Hubcaps

Take a look at a GMC cap if you want to have ones on the front of a 4WD. It can be machined to open the center section without the tail ends of the Chevy Crest.

Re: Hubcaps

So here is my question. If you have a 4x4 are we saying that for a 62 Chevy either the chromed or white ones below are correct and then we just take one of the matching GMCs below and bore them out to the ridge to match?
Thanks,
AJ
BTW I cant seem to find a shot of a white Chevy one now of course.

Re: Hubcaps

I was thinking of ways to cut a hub hole and I have used one of these for cutting circles in ductwork. I think this would do it.

Re: Hubcaps

The reality is chrome would not work because when you bore out the GMC ones you would still have leftover red edges. I think it would look most correct with the white and you would have the same issues after you bored out the GMC so it is probably best and cheaper to just find some used ones that are not dented and repaint them all white with the two red bowties after you are done boring out the GMC ones.

Re: Hubcaps

I think the easier solution is to not bore them out and just find the factory 4x4 hubcaps.

Re: Hubcaps

I see them from time to time. Were some 61-63 caps on ebay last week, guy had 1 for $25 to purchase. You want the 61-63 caps or the 64-66? The nice thing about the factory cap is that there is reinforcement where the hole is for the hub. If you bore it out, your basically just cutting a hole in the center of the cap, but I dont see the strength in that.

They were OEM parts. They may not have come stock, but could be ordered and do exist. I have found no factory literature on the trim that runs down the back of the cab either, the factory option clock or the dinsmore compass, but they all exist.
And to correct myself...I did find info on the compass, clock and trim in the custom accessory manual for 63, they show install and parts #'s -sorry. Believe Aerotruck had some literature on these items also.

Re: Hubcaps

This is the cap I was referring too. My apologies, I'm just sorry, for everything at this point.

3 rusty ones came from "Trent" out in Alberta, a couple of hours with different hammers and there as dented as new! lol

Re: Hubcaps

Those GMC caps dont pop up very often. I could see how those could be bored out. If nothing else...the forum should have about every piece of documentation on factory hubcaps....haha. I still haven't located it yet, bu I have a pic of a 61-63 cap somewhere...arg. I have a pic of a different GMC cap. Whats the difference in the one I posted here and the ones in the post above? They all have the 61-63 style to them.

Re: Hubcaps

There seems to be a part number for 61-62 then a different number for 63 in GMC, as well as a Blue center and Red center.

Re: Hubcaps

The hubcaps with the older logo are Canadian GMC, the other logo style that matches the grill letters, are American GMC.

Re: Hubcaps

The closest I can get is 69-74 chevy truck & van, but a little later model than Im familiar with. Have seen them with several different color bowties. I would hit up the 67-72 guys...they should be able to narrow the date down if no one here can.

I think they look good in red. Look similar to the 61-63 caps from a distance. They look good on the truck
