Correct 72 EEC reproduction gas tank w 1 1/2 inch neck

Has anyone bought a correct 72 EEC gas tank that has the correct 1 1/2 inch neck? I bought a Spectra tank which was listed as 70-72 w EEC. It has a 2 inch and my original cap won't fit.

thanks in advance,
Ray

If i remember right LMC catalog shows only 72 with eec. It should have the 11/2" neck. Only the non eec 71 back have the 2" neck. Iirc.
Pull up LMC trucks catalog and verify. Good description with drawings.

Their catalog states both non- EEC and EEC tanks have a 2 inch neck.

Thanks,

Ray I don't have the catalog in front of me but i can tell you thats not right. I bought a non eec tank from them a few months ago and it has the 2" neck as described. All that small print can be confusing and with more than one tank displayed.

I know what you mean and know the 72 should have the 1 1/2 neck, but I sure can't seem to find one anywhere. I'm thinking maybe they are making the EEC tanks with the 2 inch necks. I have the Spectra tank here but I really want to use the correct gas cap etc....

Yeah i understand from a restoration standpoint you would want the "correct" parts on it. If not, you could change the cap and grommit and use that spectra tank?

Mine is an EEC tank for a 1971 I purchased from Brothers. I also got a new grommet. I just put a caliper on it and the area where the cap goes is 2.3" in diameter

Actually I used the small grommet w WD-40 and it worked fine. Since I can't find any source that sells the correct tank, I will try and find a cap for the Sprectra tank.

Thanks,
Ray

Were you able to find a non vented cap? If so do you have a part number?

Thanks,
Ray

Re: Correct 72 EEC reproduction gas tank w 1 1/2 inch neck

I apologize Ray. I was wrong on the LMC listing. They do show the 1 1/2" and 2" grommits but above them it says the replacement tanks are both 2" filler necks.
If your spectra tank has a 2" neck and is an eec tank it looks like a cap for a 70-71 eec tank would be the right one. What does spectra offer?

Or you could check with your local parts store for a non vented cap.

No problem! I couldn't find any listings for Spectra gas caps. I know I can use use a 70 cap but it appears they are all vented.

Thanks,
Ray

Re: Correct 72 EEC reproduction gas tank w 1 1/2 inch neck

Here's the information needed to find & purchase one for the 1972 EEC tank. This cap still vents in other than ordinary circumstances but it is a safety requirement mandated by the Federal government. Due to the following

OE Vacuum relief prevents fuel vapors from exiting the fuel system via the fill tube under normal operations. This allows an alternative path for air to flow into the tank if there is an obstruction in the vapor recovery or vapor management systems. Permits pressure to escape if the vapor management system malfunctions.

Fuel cap for Reproduction 70-72 EEC tank with large fuel filler neck
Stant Fuel Tank Cap 10704
Part Number: 10704
Features: OE Equivalent Fuel Cap
A "Torque Override" feature aids in the proper installation of the fuel cap. It produces an audible click as the o-ring that seals the cap is properly compressed.

GAS CAP
A "Breakaway Groove" allows the cap to remain sealed and prevent fuel leakage during a crash or impact, even if some of the cap has broken away.
OE Pressure relief prevents fuel vapors from exiting the fuel system under normal operating conditions. This allows an escape path for pressure in the event of an impact situation where the fuel tank has collapsed.
Permits pressure to escape if the vapor management system malfunctions.
A "Lost Motion" feature permits the cap handle some freedom to turn while maintaining a seal, which could aid in the prevention of fuel tank leakage during a crash or impact.

We do not sell the cap so you'll need to order 1 online or pickup at a local auto parts store. Nor do we sell these incorrectly made 1972 EEC tanks. Currently no one reproduces a correct 72 EEC tank with the correct 1 1/2" fuel filler neck, when or if they make it correctly we'll then carry the tank.
