1987 GMC "Patch" build

I just recently (last week) bought a 1987 GMC Sierra Classic 4x4. PO said the truck was at 90% when I bought it but after looking at the things that are left undone Id estimate it at almost 85% complete, luckily all the heavy rust repair appears to have already been done all that's left is some electrical (windows, rear lights, radio, multifunction switch) Exhaust, brakes and a tune up.

Right now the goal is to do as much as I can to make sure it passes PA State inspection. I have the muffler (Summit 3" welded turbo muffler) and pipe to cobble together a 3" inch exhaust for it since right now it doesnt have anything beyond the y-pipe, thats the project for this weekend, along with replacing the light on the front that's out and rewiring the tail/brake/marker/ and back up light (po had the bed off and cut the original wiring harness)

I also plan to try and get the wipers working which should be fun as this will be my first try at replacing a multifunction switch with cruise on one of these old trucks, wish me luck lol

All in all its a pretty solid truck and with abit more TLC (and $$$$) itll be a dang good truck.

Re: 1987 GMC "Patch" build

So just an update, I have Patch down at the mechanics shop waiting for inspection when he gets his other jobs done.

So as it stands right now the tires are dry rotted so it needs new tires, which are on order and will be here next week (I went from the 31x10.50 that are on it back to the stock 235/75/15, my knees will thank me)

Once I get it back Ill have to redrill the rear bumper bracket mounting holes (since the po repaired the rusted rear section of frame with one from a long bed and had to cut off an additional 4 inches to make it all work ) and replace the bed mounting hardware as only a couple bolts are holding the dang thing on .

Once I get it back though I have a list of other things to keep me busy on it through next year, that is what I can get done outside before the snow flies that is, if I can ever figure out how to post pictures in my posts Ill post more.

Re: 1987 GMC "Patch" build

I know its been a few months since I posted last so here's an update. Since I bought the truck its been sitting at my local mechanics waiting to for new parts. I've done what I could when I had the free time to do so.
So, finally I get a text from my mechanic asking me to come down to the shop, so I go, my trucks on the rack, tires are on, brakes are done, bumpers back on but they have a blown brake line on the front of it, and of course itll have to moved back out again to make room for the other vehicles on his schedule.

Not really sure how much longer itll be till I get my truck back, and theres still a few things I have to do to it yet (I really would have rather worked on the truck myself but my landlord takes a dim view on that.)

At this point I just wanna drive my , get a few miles on him and be happy .

Re: 1987 GMC "Patch" build

Not much to tell on the progress of my '87. All the brakes are done, tires are mounted and balanced, had to replace the lock cylinder and turn signal switch, exhaust is done but I still don't have it back as of yet. Signals and wipers arent working yet so it cant be inspected, So at this point all I can do is draw up a list of things to do to the it when I do finally get it back. Was hoping Id have it back before Christmas but it looks like I wont get it back until after the New Year .

Merry Christmas to all and I hope you guys and gals have a safe and Happy New Year (hope 2023 is a HELLUVA lot better than 2022.)

Re: 1987 GMC "Patch" build

Sadly I had to sell Patch, again life got in the way of my plans again. but on the bright side It wasn't in vain though. Gives me the chance to get my girlfriends 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab LT back on the road again so I reckon things just work out (sadly the Silverado is only 2wd though.)
