Very nice 1972 K20 Fire truck up for auction in Scott Kansas 8/10

Is anyone near this that could go check it out or go to the auction? It looks like a very nice truck that started out as an original K truck cut and lengthened. It would be cool to get more info on it. I'd love to go down and try to buy it but it just isn't in the cards currently.

That's a cool custom-built truck. stretched frame and they added some vintage speed equipment on the engine. I wonder what's inside. I bet a hotter came at least. The reversed Budd wheels seem odd to me. I wonder if the ran the inners originally

I was wondering if it had a cab chassis rear end in it since it had those wheels but IDK. A pic of the spid would be cool to see what it says. Probably nothing to do with the fire truck side of it I'm guessing.

Yes sir they were. The HO52 was the only rear axle offered on the K20s as far as I know.

True; most Chevy’s got the 52, and GMC’s used the Dana 60.

Thanks for posting it. Would be neat to see the SPID. Interesting it has optional lower trim, chrome front bumper, and hub caps but not factory cab marker lamps.

I found the cargo light and automatic interesting as well. I’ve never paid much attention but I would think most of the custom trim trucks would have been more likely to have come with 3 or 4 speeds. Just my own thinking not really something I’ve observed, obviously you could order them however you wanted.

Good to know. I've never had a GMC 67-72 K20 and didn't know they used D60s in them. That's pretty odd.

I found the bolt through the center of the hub cap strange too.

Re: Very nice 1972 K20 Fire truck up for auction in Scott Kansas 8/10

woefully inadequate srw 3/4t chassis for a fire/brush rig that size..

reminds me of a similar rig that responded to a brush fire on the farm - buried to the frame before getting anywhere near the fire

cool hobby truck possibly tho

I find it interesting that it has an AM radio and the cigar lighter delete option. C'mon man, how else are firefighters suppose to light their cigarette's?

I was trying to figure that out myself, I can’t come up with any logical explanation.

I wonder if they had some type of backup bell bolted to the rear caps, similar to what you’d find on construction equipment before the electric beepers came out?

Wow, that is bad form! Mounting the wheel on backwards. IMO, they should have installed wide base 9.75x16.5 wheels on 12-16.5 tires, next best alternative to duals.

Re: Very nice 1972 K20 Fire truck up for auction in Scott Kansas 8/10

I see now the rear wheels aren't Budds, they are standard wheels reversed. The truck probably had an Arrowcraft DRW conversion on it. The kit used four standard wheels, both facing normally, with a barrel spacer that bolted up to inner lug nuts with outer wheel bolted to it. The center bolt holds the hub cap on and is threaded into the axle flange

That’s the only way the hubcap could be retained, there’s no nubs on the inside of a wheel to retain it.....

Maybe I do but I miss more

Back to the HO52 used in '72s where it was already answered "yes", I just want to add that '72 was the last year. So the 67-72s were the last trucks to run them. The 14-bolt came out in '73 and ran till... I dunno. A really long time, too . Without checking, I believe the HO rears began use in '38 or so. Maybe early '40s

The full floater 10.5” 14 bolt as we know it is still made by AAM for use in GM 3/4 ton trucks with out the Duramax. My ‘18 Sierra 2500 has one. The biggest change is the addition of disk brakes. Not to be confused with the 11.5” 14 bolt used in the duramax and ram trucks which is similar but not the same.

The 11.5” 14 bolt Rear Axle was also used in the trucks with the 8.1L gas engine & Allison 1000 5 speed automatic Transmission (RPO - GT5 - G80). The 2003 Chevy 2500 that I just dismantled had one in it. (4.10 Posi.)
