Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

what about going with the 5.13 gears with the 30" tire? and just deal with not driving it on the street except to drive it to the track lol. i'd rather be fast on the track then be able to drive it around town.

its the stock rearend.

there are some more things i want to do to the engine as well. the engine now is a smallblock 400 with JE forged flat tops, 11:1 compression, 272 comp cam, stock heads that are decked and rebuilt with good parts, the block has been decked, it has the torker edelbrock intake on it, and a small 600 holley carb, accel distributor.

things i want to change to - Brodix heads, solid cam, roller rockers, team g intake, demon carb.

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

Your starting line ratio with the 4.88's will be 11.63 . With the 5.13's it will be 12.92 . If it hooks its gonna leave hard no matter how much power you have . It will be exciting for the first 100 feet anyhow .

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

If you ran the 5.13 with a 28" tire now that would probably be a good gearing combo for your current set up. That will allow you to go 90mph assuming 15% slip at 6,500rpm. This will put you about 3,250 at 45mph.

As you step your game up and need more mph, you can easily switch to a 30" tire and go 96mph assuming the 15% slip and your 45mph rpm then drops to 3,000rpm.

When you put the big block in, a 33" tall tire with 15% slip and 5.13's will allow you to go 106mph at 6,500 rpm. This will drop your 45mph rpm to 2,750.

Do you see your getting it to go beyond 106mph in the 1/8?

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

Ima stick with small tire higher gear ratio on this one till the motor topend gets done . But then again I have a small tire / high gear mindset . Things really get expensive after 11.50 . Just my opinion .

But like I said super73 the sooner to 3rd the faster he's going to go,I want to know his weight thow ,If you can get your 60' down around 1.7-1.8 you should hit 3rd around 180-200' with 513 and 240-260 with 488 at about rpm range 3500- 6500 shifting at 42or3 should pull like hell should be in 80 something mph .I would gear it for my motor and you've got to know all this!I ran a comp 305 DUR. cam and that was its range and was a sweet a** cam.it 60d 1.68-1.72 and shifted at 4400

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

no i dont really see it going any faster then 106 at this point, to break into the 6's season after next with a bbc is my goal over the next two years.

Rodms - badass truck man, thats the look i was wanting and i think i'll shoot for the 5.13's and just keep it on the drag strip. how do you like those wheels compared to like a weld brand? other then looks i mean. i actually like the look of those on your truck too.

the topend stuff guys will be done before next season kicks off so thats what i'm going to plan the rest of the build off of. my truck weighs what a stock 85 chevy would weigh. its full interior and nothing has been removed from the truck to make it any lighter. that should give you an about weight anyways. i'll get it weighed in the next few weeks to know for sure.

I didn't think I was disagreeing with that.. Using all three gears and getting him to cross the line right in the max RPM window, is going to net the fastest ET.

Gear it to cross the traps 100-200rpm before redline.

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

so basically gear it with 5.13's and play the tallness of the slicks to get the right combo.....

gotcha....

thanks guys.

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

5.13 in a 10 bolt 8.5 is getting pretty small on pinion size . Just something to think about with a 12.92 ratio and a big tire .

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

Cam would be good to grow in to with a set of good heads and some decent compresion.. For the average semi stock head, and 9-1 or even 10-1 static compresion, I think there are better cam designs out there using comps book of lobes and specing one out..

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

look back up at the heads that will be going on the car, and i've stated that i have 11-1 comp now.

guys i will not be drag racing this truck as it sits now, engine or suspension wise.

i will already have the brodix heads, the cam, intake, carb, suspension all done before next track season starts.

should i look for a 12 bolt to go under the truck? where can i find one out of that is 5 lug and the width i need?

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

if you don't want to do the rearend but once put a good 9 inch for in it! I would get moser 35 spline axles and a spool.

You could make a 10 or 12 bolt work short term but not in the long run. plus when you break the 10 or 12 bolt the wheel can come off and destroy a bed side.

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

So with out knowing everything about your set up, I took some guesses and this is what I have come up with based on the info you provided. Please feel free to correct anything and I'll be happy to make a few adjustments..

This is based on a 11.02-1 cr using:
62cc heads
-10cc valve relief flat top pistons
Pistons sitting -.01" in the hole
.043 thickness head gaskets
Bore of 4.02
Stroke 4"

1.5 rocker

1 5/8's headers

Do you have any idea what the intake centerline is on that cam? That is going to dictate dynamic compression and should change the curve slightly.

Re: suspension/gearing/slicks

Here is an overlay with some changes.. I played with header diameter and length and this is the best I came up with. Leaving your cam selection and head selection alone still at 11-1 cr..

Changed the program from a 1 5/8 24" long header to a 1 3/4 30" long header
Changed from a 750 carb to a 1050 carb
Switched from a 1.5 rocker to a 1.7
