Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

Your project is looking pretty sweet. I think I came and looked at a truck you had a couple of years ago. I remember that unibody. I had the 05 lowered chevy and I finally got some 20's on it. Also, does that shawn guy that you all posted about being aware of have his own shop or am I thinking of a different guy? I think I might have gotten lucky and not of bought something off of him.

Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

Its still sittin the way you saw it last Brandon lol. As far as the motor i picked up a wrecked 86 chevy pickup that has a lt1 4l60e in it which is going to be the doner for the crewcab. The wrecked truck is the same one i bought the brown bed off of and my rearend out of for the half ton swap. I had forgot all about it having a lt1 in it, one of those deals you would never have expected it to have that so noone had bought it yet.

Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

Ok i have an update i will be working on the crew again this weekend. My father is going out of town and told me i could use his a/c garage . I am looking forward to finally being able to fix the frame in the back, get my suburban rear bumper on it, hitch, rear sway bar and last but not least put my bed on it!

Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

Ok here s some updates. I got the frame fixed today here are some pics from begining to end. I put my degree wheel on the frame in front of the wheels where the bed mounts and behind the wheel where the bed mounts. The frame dropped 5 degrees when the put the c-knotches in. The PO had 2 1/2inch spacers under the rear of the bed spacing it up. Not to mention they did not center them up.

Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

After the measuring it was time to get started. I began by grinding off the driver side knotch by cutting the welds around the plate itself. Once i got it close i used a hammer and punch to get behind and pry it out. Once it was off you could see that the frame had broke under the knotch and th PO just welded right over the top of it. For the passenger side it was centered up over the axle so i just ground around the backside up to about an inch where the frame started to drop down that way the frame behind would be able to pivot. Once everything was cut i used an air jack under the rear of the frame rail to position the rear of the frame where it should be.

Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

Once i had it positioned i slid the knotch i had removed in the frame and centered it over the rearend. I centered it by measuring from the center of the knotch back to the rear spring perch making the driver side match the passenger. You can see in the picture how much i had to move it forward. Ended up being about an 7/8in forward. Once this was achieved i clamped the front and tack welded it into place. After the front was tacked it was time to make measurements with my degree wheel and measure and meaure several times making sure it was in the right spot before i tacked the back and then finally welding it in place

Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

After i measured and measured again making sure everything was level a zeroed out i welded the passenger side back up solid. As you could see in the earlier pictures when the PO did the c-knotch they cut way more out than they should of and the knotch was not even close to the bottom of the frame so it left about a 2inch gap. I made some plates to fill them in and welded them solid. Once the knotch was welded all the way around now i traced out a peice of steel to box the frame rail in. I know its not much but its way better than it was.

Re: Buildin my 88 Crew Cab long bed AKA STRETCH!

After i filled and boxed both sides i put the wheels back on and set it on the ground and measured again. The frame rail is now the same measurement in front and behind the knotch! Thats all i got done today but tomorrow i plan on putting a rear sway bar on it i have been saving for a few years. Putting a suburban rear bumper and bolting my new bed on! Hopefully all my measurements will have paid off and everthing will line right up.

Jitteryguy, try this place(http://www.stockinteriors.com) . I bought some from here for a 72 I built awhile back. Better prices for just as nice carpet.

Will, Truck is looking great! At least you can cruise w/out worrying that rear is going to fall out from under you! Let me know if you need help setting the new bed on.
