305 v6 question

I am in the process of tearing a 305E v6 down, I am trying to remove the crankcase ventilation filter housing. I have not been able to get it removed and dont want to damage it. Has anyone ever removed this before and have any tips on how to remove it. thanks

From the Jolly 6066 GMC website and credit goes to Lewis Matkin; here is his response;

"Jim, this is Lewis Matkin. That strange housing on the driver's side of the
rear of the block is a filter, a crankcase ventilation filter. It unscrews the
top half from the bottom half and exposes a cartridge air filter. I hope this
answers your question. Welcome to the group!!!!"

I have the top part unscrewed I'm looking to remove the bottom portion of it. Sorry I didn't clarify that prior.

found this as well.

Good morning Jake,on our 63 the crankcase filter canister is a two piece unit,
the top unscrews off while the base remains in the crankcase.I was'nt sure how
it worked,and I thought I had to pop the whole canister out,but that was'nt the
case. It appears to be a common occurance that these filters were neglected
judging by some of the comments that I have read.The one on our truck has never
been changed.

Jolly says it's a pressed fit and...


It's a tight fit, but its just pressed in. It may be stuck after 40 some odd
years, but you can work it out. Spray some stuff like WD40 on it, let it sit
for awhile, the pry up on the base. The canister will unscrew in about the
middle so you can change the filter element, NAPA #2718.

I have removed two from old engines, but they were out of the trucks. Good
luck.

Scrape where the canister meets the block to get away the grime and soak it with PB Blaster for about a day and then carefully twist and pull it out. Might require some love from channel locks or something similar.

Yeah soak it and soak it then soak it some more I destroyed the last one that I did.

Yep, Scrape it clean if the heavy oil, spray the PB blaster or such let it soak. Using a light rubber mallet, tap it back and forth a bit then pull it up. My unit was built with the downdraft tube. Slightly fidderent but you had more to grab onto.

Thanks. I have been searching for days on info about removing one of these and finally found this thread. I assume getting it back in is straightforward, maybe a light tapping with previously mentioned mallet?

Ok...soaked in PB Blaster for 24 hours. Can't get a good grip with my hand due to lack of clearance between engine and firewall. With top screwed off, I can grab the wall of it with channel locks and wiggle it, but wiggling and pulling as best I can it is not budging. I have not tried prying from the bottom...again, not much clearance with it in the truck. So any more tips before I destroy it? LOL.
