is it bad when you're trying to win the lottery to be able to buy all the parts you wish you could put on... Some lucky duck in the town I live in was one of the mega millions winners out of that 500,000,000 jackpot the other day. Should've been me and I could have bought the dakota digital guages and the tube control arms I want...

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB

So a little more progress over the last couple of days I put on a reciever hitch and trailer light, and brake control last weekend. No pictures but it wasn't anything too exciting, just a lot of tedious work getting the wiring for the brake control ran and wired up. We traded our vehicle that was set up for pulling a trailer, so I had to get the C10 ready to pull as we're getting ready to do some home improvement stuff... My front suspension needs freshening and I'm doing disc brakes so since the truck will be doing a little more than puttering around, I felt like I should get that done now. Doing balljoints brakes, anti-sway bushings, etc... Hoping to finish it up this weekend... Blasted the donor spindles and dust shields last weekend weekend, and got them painted up with some rustoleum hammered finish paint, turned out really good, makes it look like steel but should keep it from rusting much...

Also got new calipers, painted them with some silver caliper paint hoping to prevent some rust...

cleaned up the bearings etc. ready to put them in the new 6 lug rotors...

The hard work will happen this weekend, pulling the front end apart, and changing ball joints and getting the control arms cleaned up, blasted and repainted. There is about 43 years of grease and grime on them.

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB

Got the passenger side broken down and dropped off at the sand blaster. I decided after blasting my rear springs I wasn't going to mess with the front. I think I wasted about 30 pounds of sand on the ones in the back and still didn't get them that good. Getting my grimy A arms blasted also. Going to get the drivers side pulled tonight and drop them off tomorrow and hopefully get the passenger ones back when I drop the others off...

A buddy mentioned that I should get my oil leaks taken care of before I put all this stuff on because I'll be pissed if my refurbed parts get grimy... He's right... Not sure I can add that to my todo list right now though, I know I have a rear main leaking and probably a pan gasket. Most of the leaks are behind the crossmember. So I think that will have to wait until I figure out my motor strategy.

I was looking at POL they have front shock relocators but I'm not sure it would do much to effect my suspension since I'm staying at stock height. Would love to hear some thoughts on the subject if anyone has any...

Thanks Tinker! 42 years of rust and grime takes some time to clean up, dropping off the drivers side Arm stuff, cross link and anti-sway bar at the blaster today. Hopefully get it back before the weekend so I can get it painted and all put back together, I can't wait to drive it with everything fresh up front again, I'm sure it'll be like a different truck...

A few more pis of before the blaster...

And got all the pieces back from the blaster yesterday, I'm excited to get them painted and back on. Should have it done this weekend...

The cab is almost finished also and should be back in my garage in the next week or so maybe even this weekend. Very excited to get it back home...

Thank JRanger!

Made my little bucket blaster seem like a joke... Had to wait a week for it but well worth it and the price was right...

Ready to put it back together today... Lower ball joints replaced, in the process of cutting the rivets in the uppers not a lot of fun...

Wow, Looks awesome. I can't wait to get some good progress like this done. I was thinking of buying a sand blaster set up, but guess it would be a lot easier if I took it to a shop. :-)

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB

James, I think the small blaster is good if you have a few things to do from time to time. With everything I needed done and as rusty as those parts were I didn't want to fight with it. Although as good a job as they did on these parts I will think pretty hard about doing more at home.

I really think a blast cabinet would be awesome, maybe someday I'll get me one...

Some progress today, Left side is done other than getting brake hose and anti-sway bar mounted, I ran out of steam and had to call it a day, I'll get the rest done tomorrow night after some rest. I'm really happy with the way it's coming back together... I'm ready to be able to take it for a spin again!

nice looking truck and the extra cab was truly a find. I agree with above if you plan a garage figure what you need and add at least 50% and 100% if possible. Then you will not outgrow it for maybe 6 months

I hear ya Tinker! It's all about finding creative ways to organize and space save. With the Truck tore down in there and immobile there is pretty much not enough room for anything... Should be outta there hopefully tomorrow night... The extra cab was a dream come true, it needed some pretty serious body work but that should hopefully be done in the next week or so. Hopefully I'll have my truck out of the garage so I'll have room for the cab...

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB

a few things left to do to get the wheels on and get down the road. I fought brake lines most of the day yesterday. One piece of brake line is keeping me from finishing this up. Just need a double flair on one stainless line fitting and I'll be done, going to go to a brake shop to see if they can do it for me because the tools to borrow from the parts store can't handle it.

Everything is bolted back on just waiting on the brake line then I can actually bleed the brakes and get it lined up and see how she drives.

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB

Just picked up my brake line, with a perfect double flair and the correct fitting in the right place on it, After going to three shops near where I work. The first one was Midas, nope they couldn't do it, but refered me to a machine shop down the street, can they do it? nope, but reffered me to the local repair shop literally across the street, Donavan's Service in Shawnee, KS. The owner wasn't sure if their tool could do it but his tech thought it would and said he would give it a shot. 2 hours later, my brake line is perfectly done and now I can bleed the brakes... After most of a day wasted fighting with parts store loaner tools trying to do it Saturday, the 10 dollars I spent today was like a weight being lifted off my shoulders... All about having the right tool for the job! Now I know where to go if I ever need another one done...

I should be able to take the truck for a spin tonight after a little wrenching!

The cab made it home tonight, WOOO HOOO very pleased with how it came out, It's going to look awesome with color on it... it'll have to wait a little while to get ready to prep it but I have a great place in the garage for it park until I can get it ready to go on and the rest of the truck ready for paint...

Re: What I can afford, when I can afford it... 70 Chevy LWB

I'm in the throws of redoing the master bedroom and bathroom, but the birthday came and went and put a few extra dollars in my pocket so had to go spend them at Harbor Frieght!

From what I've read, there are a few mods I can do to this and have a really sweet blast cabinet! It was on sale for 209, and with a 20% off coupon got it for 167! Good times. Back to work on the master bed and bath so I can get back to the truck about the time the weather starts to cool off hopefully!

What did it cost you to have those parts blasted? I will need to do this someday too. Thanks.
