Exhaust ideas for 6.0

Hello Fellow Members,
I have recently got my 6.0 ls swap to start the last weekend in my 1970 C10 2wd long bed. I am really disappointed that I did not take many pictures at all during the process (really drawn out process). I will post pics of the truck and a video of the truck running with only Doug Thorley headers. I still have plenty of work to do it, but I managed to hook up enough to hear her run (great motivation to continue).

Back to the topic, I want to know and hear some of your exhaust set-ups that you have plumbed into your 6.0's! It will be a little while before I plan on getting the exhaust installed.

I don't have mine that far along yet but welcome to the board from another Iowa boy. And yes, we want pictures...

Re: Exhaust ideas for 6.0

I don't really have a decent idle clip, but it's a cammed LQ4, longtubes, dual 3" stainless exhaust with Magnaflows, no x or h pipe, dumped at the rear axle.

The truck itself is not the flawless body like you see from everyone else on this site, but I wanted to add a reliable engine and tranny to drive her all over the place. Just got a front bushing/joint kit, static drop kit, front disc brakes, rear drum rebuild kit from ECE last week that I need to start on.

Thanks for the welcoming, i have been a member for a while but with very little posts (too much reading and learning). Only way i was able to get through most of my issues was to read through these forums for hours at a time!

PS. I just recently moved back to SD, thanks for reminding me to update that.

Pic of the pickup before starting with the new 6.0 ls based engine. I don't take a lot of pictures and now I regret that fact.

Re: Exhaust ideas for 6.0

According to the exhaust program I have, if your engine is a stock LQ4 and you have Doug Thorleys on it your exhaust diameter should be 2.75" to 3", you should have an H in the system 19.4" behind the end of the 2nd primary pipes and a muffler 38.7" back form the 2nd primary into chambered mufflers approximately 370 cubic inches in dimension. After the muffler it doesn't really matter what you do as long as you keep the diameter at least the same size as goes in it. I would personally go with 2.75" pipes because you will reach volumetric efficiency sooner and start creating power lower in the rpm range.

Re: Exhaust ideas for 6.0

You won't find 2.75 as much at exhaust shops or parts stores as you might hope....at least not the "commercial" ones. The universal stuff is all sold in 2.5 or 3" for the most part.

The actual custom exhaust places, tubing companies themselves, and online you can still get 2.75". Just my random observation.

I 100% agree it isn't the easy way to do it, but I always finding my way down the path of doing things the hard way.

Re: Exhaust ideas for 6.0

Or just run 3" pipe since bench flowing exhausts is still ballparking (just really good ballparking). Most setups wouldn't notice the difference, and since so few of these things stay stock intake/cam/heads you'll end up wanting the 3" anyway.

I'm not discounting your calc, which does offer a lab-ideal result. I just think that even with a program, there are factors that aren't being accounted for. Especially if I were considering a stainless system where cost is a factor, I'd rather build a 3" system I'm less likely to outgrow.

Re: Exhaust ideas for 6.0

I'm really happy that I have been receiving this information. Some time down the road I may look at swapping the cam, but for now I just want the thing running for me! More information is welcome as I still have a lot to learn and over research before making a decision!!

For some reason I am having issues with adding the video from my iPhone of the start up. Is there an easy way to do this?

I absolutely agree with you! The program does not factor in cost of materials, future engine modifications, or packaging. How in the world are you supposed to install a muffler in the middle of a cross member or equal length headers that allow service to spark plugs? The moment you change something the calculation changes. What I do find interesting in the program is that if you use shorty headers the program recommends 2.75" exhaust pipe, if you use long tube headers it wants you to use 3" pipe and the tri-Y calculation says to use any size between the two. I use it as a starting point and am more than happy to make accommodations for packaging.
