Gear setup

What do you all think before I close her up ? Been playing with shims for 2 hrs

14 bolt rear

I had the opposite problem with the one I just did. Drive side pattern was up on the heel and I had to get the pinion deeper to get it right. I think kwmech is correct, you are too deep.

Gosh, maybe I had it backwards. I'm looking at some of the pics and notes I kept and it was increasing shim (pulling the pinion out) that moved my drive side pattern towards the toe...

Here is a comparison of a couple of combinations I had tried (19 vs 35 pinion shim, 006 vs 007 backlash):

No matter what I do I can't get it to center on gear especially the drive side. Getting frustrated

I can understand that. I went through hell with mine before I realized the carrier was actually bent. I wish I could offer some more help, but I don't really mess with these things very often.

A common gotcha is being on the wrong side of the carrier break but I don't think you are that far off here. What size pinion shims have you tried so far?

Was the drive side down on the toe like that with 0.018 too? I'd be tempted to run a pattern with no shim just to see what it looked like.

Actually got worse with the thinner shim

I pretty much started from scratch. Redone the bearing preload. This is with a .22 shim and .5 backlash. Hopefully someone gives me direction from here. Been taking way too long on this

Focus on getting the drive pattern centered and get the backlash up around 8-10 and see where the coast falls. At least with the full float it is easy to change around relatively quick

Put the 019 shim in and set the BL to 8 or 9. the picture you showed with the 19 and the bl at 6 isn't too bad. Open the BL a little and we'll see what it looks like. Is the nose cone assy already set up with the proper preload on the bearings? Do you have a really good flat file?

That's not my picture with the 19.
Yes pinion has proper preload
FYI these are used gears with new bearings

I’ve always heard that it’s hard to get a good pattern on a worn set. I think it’s often recommended to pay more attention to the coast side in that case as it’s not worn as much. I’ve never had any real experience with used ones but you might want to read up on that. You may just have to to get it centered face/flank and run it.

This is good advice. A used gearset will be very difficult, sometimes impossible, to setup where you'll get a perfect pattern. Your patterns are not too bad

It is so much easier to keep this straight if it's all in one thread. I didn't see this one until now.
Used gears (IMHO) are a loser in the cost/benefit analysis. The extra (read frustrating) time is just not worth it in the long run. You wrestle with it for a long time, get it somewhat acceptable (as good as your patience will allow), go drive it, and one of three things happen.
You win the lottery
It works, but is noisy and you live with it until it fails
It works, but is noisy and you can't live with it.

The 2nd or 3rd are more likely, so now you are doing this work all over again. This time with new gears and new bearings because of the garbage that went through them while making that whining noise.

I did this far a living for almost 11 years, done hundreds of them. Used ring and pinion is a rear axle almost never work, unless you can take them out of the original axle yourself. Even that assumes they were ok in it? It's kind of a self-defeating thing. By the time you test drive a sketchy set-up, you have likely ruined it.
I replaced a set in the rear of a truck where the guy did it himself at home. He drove it less than 20 miles before destroying them.
On a front axle, which sees far less use (and almost all of that it at low speed), you can "get by" with a lot more.

The best deal I was able to find on the AAM gearset I wanted was at dennysdriveshaft. I bought a bunch of stuff through east coast gear supply as well. Both were good to deal with. Seems like the best price varies depending on what ratio and manufacturer you are looking at.

So I went with new ring and pinion and new spider gears
It looks a bit close to the top but this is without any shims and .007 backlash
