Heads look great, John. Did they do a before and after on a flow bench?

Re: My '67 Fleetside C10 renew

I don't think so. They send them out to an old timer up in Sandpoint, ID along with my intake and exhaust gaskets (that didn't come back). I guess he's been doing these for quite some time. $200 for the port work. You may have noticed in the photos that they didn't un-shroud the intake valves. Boy got tired of arguing with them. They say it's unnecessary but I can't imagine they performed that step at the factory for the 2.02" valves for no reason. I might take them someplace else for that step.

Re: My '67 Fleetside C10 renew

Oh, and when he did the port work he cut through some of the roofs into water jackets. Said to apply some JB Weld! The spots that got cut through were right below the rocker stud bosses, so the shop drilled and tapped 7/16" down through the stud bores and installed short screws with epoxy and pressure tested them. Bit of a nightmare.

Sounds like it! Hitting water can happen when you're flying blind without sonic testing, but I'm surprised an experienced port man had that problem. I sure wouldn't trust JB Weld alone to fix it. Sounds like the shop applied a suitable patch though. Cast iron heads can be opened up more than aluminum because they tolerate a thinner wall thickness, but man, it's so much easier to fix holes in aluminum.

Re: My '67 Fleetside C10 renew

I thought there was someone in Spokane doing port work. When my son had his 4.3 built at S&J I thought they sent the heads to someone in Spokane and had them ported.

I haven't come across anyone local. I know you asked to find out who this guy is. When I brought the heads back to the shop to show them the holes I asked. All I could get out of them was "Sandpoint" and that he was a quirky old codger or some sh!t like that.

It sounds like the 'quirky old codger' maybe should hang up his die grinder if he's grinding into the water jackets.

Re: My '67 Fleetside C10 renew

Nothing to report in terms of "work" but I have been squirreling some moolah. How about some forged domes for 6" rods!? Will have to turn some of the domes off to bring it back down to 11:1. Also nabbed some Lunati stud girdles and a Melling pump. Boy sprang for the 7/16" rocker arm studs and guide plates. Another grandy and I'll be assembling a bad-ass short block Mouse. Another five hunny after that and I'll be long block. Another thou after that and it'll be nearly turn-key!

Re: My '67 Fleetside C10 renew

No more wife, new life.

Had to pull the plug boys and loaded her into a storage shed. I'll still be plunking along with this motor in the meantime but it'll likely be next year before I can build a new shop. To be continued...

As a guy who took 25 years to finish a project, I for one will be patiently waiting for your thread to resume. My personal philosophy is that when it comes to my hotrods, the only person I have to make happy is myself.

Re: My '67 Fleetside C10 renew

Thanks all. Things will be better. Knuckles, his little sister and I are shacked up at Gramma and Grandpa's. Two tries are enough for me, so I think I'm going to build a shop out here stick around. I'll have more time and money to devote to the project too. No hard feelings with Wifey really. Mutual decision, just terribly sad. I'm not far from getting back on that 327. Brought my heads to another shop and they found more issues.
