Cool 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

I'm having my 14 bolt redone, and am having a "locker" put in. I'm going to buy itnseperate but I need help. The most confusing part to me is terminology. Locker no spin tru-track... It's all pretty confusing. What I want, is something that locks the rear wheels, whether doing a burnout, in the mud, or driving down the road. Thanks in advance if you guys can help!

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

A locker of any type uses mechanical gears to lock the differential under unequal loads, as opposed to a limited-slip (Positraction) that uses clutches to lock the differential. There are different types of lockers, and several manufacturers, but that's the basic difference. Some users don't like the chatter or noise they get with lockers on the street, but others don't seem to even notice. There are a number of threads on the board discussing the merits of different manufacturers' lockers.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

All the off road magazines for years love the Detroit locker in the 14 bolts and they are one of the cheapest ones to boot. I wouldn't consider anything else.

Cadillac that already helps tremendously. Locker it is so we have a starting point. Now, one to hold up to a 454, 5k clutch dumps, and 40" Baja clawz... A Detroit work for that? I'm willing to spend for quality made in the USA parts...

Like this? It says 4.56 and up, mine has 4.10's... Is this a "full carrier" and because of that can I just order new gears?

With 40" tires you need much lower gears than 4.10's.

The differential case in the link looks to be a generic pic. It is priced like replacement differential gear unit not a replacement case.

Here's the pic form Summit with the same part number

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

CaptainFab - I really like to keep my truck at 4.10's right now, as that matches my front, and at 55 mph I will turning about 2k rpm. So its very street friendly in that area, plus I have a SM465 so that helps there too.

Thanks bigdav that looks like what I seen more of, just a round piece with pegs sticking out of it. Wonder who's picture is right?

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

With 4.10's and a 40" tire you will be about 1900 rpm's at 55 mph. That is a bit below the recommended rpm range. Plus with those tires and gears it'll be rather worthless offroad. You'll likely have to start out in 1st gear in the SM465 all the time. With 40" tires you need to have a 5.13 or 5.38 gear.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

The round pegs are for your pinion gears.

If you look at the Jegs page all the Detroit items use that same picture. A complete posi case for a 14 bolt will twice that price.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

A guy could look into Yukon Gear's Grizzly Locker as well as the Detroit.

http://www.yukongear.com/ProductDeta...px?ProdID=8159

For years Detroit had the GM 14 bolt market segment cornered in both brut strength and price at $383.99. Detroit's price started climbing and then a few years ago some how Yukon managed to copy the Detroit locker and got it on the market, (patent expiration or something happened). Side by side they are identical in design and material build but Yukon initially undercut Detroit's price a fair bit, probably for market entry. This is when i purchased mine. Now i see the Grizzly price higher than Detroit's which has remained at about $425 for the 14 bolt for some years now where as Yukon has jacked their price up to around $490, (based on Summit racing and most prominent online 4x4 retailer prices).

Regardless, I have the Yukon Gear Grizzly locker in mine with 4.10's. I dont have 40's but im not easy on the rear end with 600+ ft/lbs of torgue.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

I wish they would change that picture. That shows it's a drop in unit. The detroit locker for the 14bolt is a full carrier replacement unit. But that is the same price for about the past 6 or so years now since they increased from $383.99. Free shipping makes the deal. Just make sure you get one for the 4.10 and down carrier.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

yes, only if you currently have a Gov-Loc limited slip unit as those use their own carrier. If you currently have an open rear diff or the eaton limited slip then you can use your carrier.

MY mistake, the detroit for the 14 bolt does drop into the carrier, it is NOT a complete replacement carrier unit. Jeez, old age already?! Sorry about that misinfo.

That is why the summit rep told you you may need to replace your carrier.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

I wouldn't say worthless just not great. I had a truck with a stock TBI 454, auto, 373s and 40" boggers and even with the not so great lowrange of the 205, still wasn't terrible offroad. On road at highway speeds will be a little doggy, I'd say 4.56s be a good compromise....

Also the Detroit pic above replaces the side gears inside the carrier, so doesn't matter what carrier you have. Its the strongest, cheapest, and easiest locker out. Why everyone uses it, Ford, Dodge, Jeep whatever....

That is my shopping cart for the rear end. A new gears 4.88 which will be perfect for towing 70 mph is at 3009 rpm or so which is good. I think. Maybe 4.56 not sure yet. B454 can you share some insight. Or someone? I'm ready to order some parts but don't wana order twice. Either way I'm going to regear look at it that way.

Those my gears.
http://m.summitracing.com/parts/mgr-625-8340
And my carrier. THESE 3 PARTS WILL WORJ TOGETHER CORRECT? Does everyone agree? I see no reason why they won't but axles are new to me and this is too costly of a mistake to make...

might not need a carrier, pull the cover and see what you have in there now. No sense buying one if you already have one....but those parts will work....

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

He has 4.10's now so he needs another carrier to change ratio. I'm not an axle expert either but it looks to me like you have the right parts. I'm sure some experience will weigh in soon. You are going to have to change gears in the front axle too right? That may need another carrier too, not sure.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

So you did decide to regear to a deeper set of gears? If so then that is the correct carrier, otherwise it is not. Dont forget to change the front also. A gear swap is a rather involved procedure that basically encompasses a differential rebuild, especially the front with bearings and seals. It's a case of "since it's apart might as well replace all wearable parts". There's nothing to the 14bolt rear but the front is more involved.

Re: 14 bolt Full-Floater Locker Help?

So you did decide to regear to a deeper set of gears?

Yes, with 4.88's and 40" tires my rpm at 70 mph will be right at 3000 which is good for towing. Right now with 40" tires and 4.10's it is at 2500 or so, or do you all think that is alright for towing? (It is a 17' car hauler mostly towing truck parts and occasionally a car.

In regards to the front, I will have to completely rebuild the Dana 44 and when that time comes... Well you guys will all know LOL!

IF I do regear to 4.88's than if I get "thick" gears can't I use the current carrier in my truck now,and just get a locker that is designed for the 4.10 and down carrier?

This is a giant learning curve so Yea bear with me... The 2nd I'm going to go to the shop and take picturrs of the axle. I can say before I dropped it off, the passenger side brakes were Locked up and the driver side would spin either way...

The part that really confuses me is the carrier. Some say I need a new one, some don't...
