73 C-50 questions

I have a 73 C-10 with a van body. The door sill has the GVW info on it. See attachment. Two problems.

1. The GVW is stated as a range 16000-24000 lbs

2. The DOT wants GCVR rather then GVW.

I can drive the truck without a CDL. But if I pull a car trailer with it I maybe in trouble. GCVR must not exceed 26000 for private use in Oklahoma. How does one figure out our find out GCVRs ? Last resort is to talk with the DOT.

Recently another member posted a data plate from his C-50 that listed what parts they used to build it (like axle size etc). Where should I be looking for that.

Thanks

Re: 73 C-50 questions

You should have a SPID on the glove box door or on an inner fender. The way I would take your VIN plate is that your truck is designed for a 16000 GVW as built, however it could be configured to 24000 from the factory. What does the title say? It will tell you something. Also it might be better to speak with a DOT guy with the title as opposed to the truck itself.

Re: 73 C-50 questions

Those VIN Plates are a little confusing, but I agree that your truck is a 16,000 GVW, especially seeing that the truck is a C-50. The GCVR is usually listed on most trucks, but as we all can clearly see it is not on that plate for some reason. I would check the SPID and Title as mrolds88 has mentioned.

Re: 73 C-50 questions

I will check the title the next time I get to the bank.

The truck has not done much in the last 10 years. A fellow bought it in california and used it to move to colorado where it sat for 2 years. I purchased it and used it to move from colorado to oklahoma. I put maybe 1000 miles on it. That was 8 years ago.

I replaced the fuel filter and gas line from the fuel pump to the carb. It runs nice but the brakes do not even pump up.

Did they keep that style in 73?. Pretty sure they changed over to the new square style. Your plate may have been changed?, my 2 cents.
