1968 suburban old carrier bearing removal from splined shaft…

Any tips on removing this thing ? Can’t get a puller on it, tried heat….cut it off without damaging splines ?

It should come off with enough heat and a hammer and chisel. Maybe more heat and a bigger hammer. My standard hammer for something like that is my 2-1/2 lb machinist hammer.

If you have a die grinder with 2 inch or so disks you can get at it better than an angle grinder and cut almost through the bearing as far as you can without getting into the shaft or other part of the shaft and then use your hammer and chisel on that slot to pop the bearing apart. For me it is a lot easier to actually do it myself than tell you how.

I used a Dremel on mine with a diamond disk. Like Mr48 said cut through it as far as you can and use a chisel to spread it open. Be sure and use some really good safety glasses and gloves. I have had them shatter. Just spread it far enough to loosen it up so you can slide it off.

Looks like I’ll need a piece of pipe to drive the new carrier bearing to the end of the shaft ? It doesn’t just slide on

If you don't have one I would find someone that has a shop press to install the new one. Just clean everything up good and polish the shaft with some emery cloth so it is nice and smooth. Then put a light coat of grease on it and the bearing should slide on without too much trouble....
