Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

nice trucks and awesome progress on both! sucks about the wreck but sounds like its working out well!! You know.... i dont seem to really like a vehicle unless I have to rebuild it from a wreck or major mechanical breakdown... if I get them and they are good to go I usually loose interest or get bored.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

What is your drop in the front and back? I have a 1995 GMC single cab like yours I'm looking to drop - I put some 80's - rally wheels on it and it looks good but yours looks better!

Thanks. I know what you mean. This is the fourth truck in four years for me. I was hoping this one would stay in one piece for a while so I could finish the other one. It only sort of sucked when this one got wrecked because I had to stop working on the white one, but not really because now I get to drive one that is fixed up the way I like it.

There is never a dumb question, just dumb answers. The drop turned out to be more of a 4.5/6 for some reason. In my opinion the 4/6 is the best looking suspention set up that still rides well on the street. Rallies are always a good choice. By the way most men like pictures over reading, my wife calls this site truck porn.

So what are you gonna do bag the white one and static the other and daily drive it?
The black one looks good lowered and with either set of wheels

Yup. The white truck is the bagged show truck and the black one is my work truck. The black one is static with rear helper bags. I've been known to throw 1200 lbs. of wire in the back just for fun.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

This weekend I spent prepping the frame for the 2 link, which should be here Thursday. I also stripped the shock towers, rear leaf spring bracket, bump stop brackets and shock tabs on the axle.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

I decided to mount the bags to the 2 link bars for a better ride. I had to order the brackets. I did received my 2 link bars and track bar. Installed those today just waiting for the bag brackets.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

Not much going on in the last week. I'm still waiting for the rest of the 2 link so I started pulling the interior out. This weekend I took the dash out. I can't believe how many screws hold the thing in.

Next is to pull the rest of the interior including the seat which is going in my black truck. I've been searching for some power leather ones.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

Well for the last few months something been keeping up at night whether to keep the Super C-Notch or box the other side and make the notch deeper. Since I moved the bags to the links there no sence keeping the brackets over the axle. I hate to do things twice, make that three times now, this truck is a show truck so it had better lay frame. I made a trip to my father-in-laws shop and had him plasma cut some steal. Last weekend I cut the old pieces out and welded in the new ones. Also mounted the panhard-bar.

On a positive note my welds are getting better.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

The last couple of weeks I decided to tear apart the front suspension. I started with the lower control arms, the drivers side needed a ball joint so I pulled them out and while I was in there I de-humped and reinforced the lower bag bracket. I also pulled the upper arms out and clearanced them so they'd move further up. Most guys just notch them, but I decided to move the line further in and then weld it back together so you can't even tell it's been done. I also ground the frame lower pocket.

I cut out about a 1/2''

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

I'm not going to notch the frame for the tie rods, Silver State Customs has some that are bent for this application. I'm leaning toward them. I still have to tub the cab for tire clearence, which leaves me no choice but to move the wiring harness, we'll see what I can figure out there. Right now, the front cross member sits a 1/2" off the ground, that's good enough for me. In the next couple of weekends I'm going to try and get a few more things done, so until next time....

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

Picked up a 5 gal air tank today from my friend, Chappy. He's going to make me a bridge out of 1 1/4 tube, I should have that at the end of the week. I also cleaned up the sway bar Sunday and painted it white. Should have a lot more progress this weekend.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

Got the bridge back, looks awesome. Welded that in during the week. I spent some time cutting the front fenders down to fit. Built a battery box so I could have a place to set the battery on so I could start it up and move it around. Yesterday was 70* so I pulled it out and washed it, This morning we had 6'' of snow. This spring's been crazy.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

This weekend I pulled the dash and door panels out of the red cab. I pulled the dash apart and began sanding the texture off. I got some of the pieces primed, but I ran out of primer. Still haven't decided what color I'm going to paint the dash and door panels; leaning towards white with airbrushing. During the week I made some air tank brackets, got them all welded up. I'll post pictures later.

Looks great! I probably have a headlight switch laying around, let me see if I can find it and test it.

Thanks.

This is definetly a case of if it isn't broken, don't fix it! This is not a direct bolt on, granted the dash fits, but every electrical part is different. So I say you have to have a screw loose to do this swap! Yes, it's a lot of work.

Re: Project ''Second Time Around''

Finally finished up the rear suspention. Got the rear shocks mounted. I took some old hardware that I'd had from a 4x4 kit for the top mount. I bought some shock tabs and welded those to the two links. Saturday I went to the parts store looking for shocks, it took a while but I found some '99 Tahoe shocks fit. Deciding I needed more fun, I welded a brace between the two bag brackets and then gave the frame a shot of gloss black. Started running wires for the compressors, they should be here Monday, then I can make my compressor brackets and maybe even go for a test drive.
