'50 AD runningboard to rear fender - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

After repairing the front of the rear fenders with patch panels, the lower contour of the fender does not quite match the running board (Both sides). Have others opted to abandon the 3 bolts that pull the two together or will there be problems in the future if they are not used? They are not too bad but I am wondering if I am making more work out of it. I have seen some that use fender welt to mask the gaps. Any suggestions or comments or pictures?

I don't see a problem with that if you have the matching welt between the fenders and cab and bed.

It's one of those spots I've fought with on my truck as even really nice original fenders don't always match up to the running boards well. You could cut some filler pieces out of some somewhat stiff rubber or soft plastic to have something to take up the space when you bolt it together.

I used aftermarket rear fenders and running boards and I had a similar issue. I changed the contour of the running board to match closer. Have you tried to bold it up yet. The reason that I ask is the fender most likely will contour to the shape of the running board......mine did any way.

I have not bolted it together there yet. I do not have holes in the fenders yet and am looking at transferring them. I think they fit pretty well and will at least get the outer bolts in to keep the rubbing down. The welt is black the same as the fenders. I am going to look at it a bit closer to see if I can persuade the runnng boards to conform since this is my first time dry fit of the sheetmetal.

I remember when I installed mine that my holes didn't line up real well either. I used a center punch to help align the holes and after I got a bolt in each one I slowly started to tighten each bolt a little at a time to conform the fender to the running board. I also didn't use fender welt and mine turned out fine.

Thanks for the responses. I will let you all know how it goes. I was thinking also of slowly tightening the bolts to conform the fender to the board.
